My car failed it's MOT on emissions, I carried out a full service and yet it failed again.
Here are the results:
First test
Fast Idle CO - Fail - 0.732 (>0.300 pass) HC - Pass - 52 (>200 pass) Lambda - Pass - 1.018 (0.970-1.030 pass)
Second Fast Idle CO - Fail - 0.780 HC - Pass - 46 Lambda - Pass - 1.014
Idle CO - Fail - 0.920 (>0.500 pass)
Second test - Changed oil, oil filter, fuel filter, air filter & spark plugs
Fast Idle CO - Fail 0.731 HC - Pass 66 Lambda - Pass 1.020
Second Fast Idle CO - Fail - 0.748 HC - Pass - 52 Lambda - Pass - 1.015
Idle CO - Fail - 0.538
Any ideas?
I think I'm going to visually check the condition of the cat and then try and find any potential air leaks. Maybe change the lambda for a known good one.

This looks to be a tired cat by those readings. Your Lamdba level is fine (slightly on the lean side if I am honest, but I am clutching at straws) and your HC looks OK too.
Did the car go in warm at all?

Chuck a litre of mineral 2 stroke oil in the fuel and take it for an Italian tune up before the smoke test, then make sure the tester tests the emissions whilst the car is hot.

Hi all,
Thanks for the replies.
First time I just took it up and they tested it when they got chance.
Second time I took it for a blast down the dual carriage way and got it really hot, but they were busy and probably didn't get round to testing it for a couple of hours.

Have they failed it on the retest then ? Don't see many older cat cars now but I just put the pedal presser on The throttle at 2800rpm and let it sit for a couple of mins after a few hard revs to get the cat lit . Your hc readings are a little low and co a bit high to get through without a cat treatment , can take a while to come down

I instructed them to carry out the emissions test first, then if it passed to carry on with the MOT retest. Unfortunately the emissions were pretty much the same as before.
I'm thinking of just replacing the cat. What's the performance of the pattern eBay cats like?

have you checked the simple things first like making sure you don't have a vacuum leak letting un-metered air into the system? On my e36 318 is I had a hose broken which goes to the charcoal canister, that had a small effect on the engines running. My car took some hard revving before it would go through the emissions test. Just a thought before you start throwing money at expensive parts....

FWIW I have been there and done that with two cats now. I'd rather get a good secondhand item if you can. But as said I'd check for the basics like vacuum leaks etc. But if it is running fine then it probably is the cat going by the readings. As a rule of thumb: CO = How rich the mixture is HC = How unburnt the mixture is ; I believe an engine burning oil can influence this reading as well Lambda = how close it is the ideal stoichometric mixture. 1 tends to equal 14.7:1 (parts of air to fuel), the perfect air to fuel mixure. Less tends to indicate the mixture is rich, with higher than one suggesting it is too lean. But that is a very loose explanation!

I'll have a good look round the vacuum lines when I get chance.
Something strange did happen when I collected the car the second time. When I started it, it wouldn't idle, it was almost like it was being starved of fuel. After driving for 30 seconds it seemed to clear. Could be a sensor playing silly buggers.
It makes things harder with it being OBD1 and me not being able to read any potential codes (although it's not throwing the check engine light).

What year is it? My friend has a 2000 E46 328i that pre-dates OBD-II. My INPA lead works with a BMW converter lead hooked up to my OBD-II lead, which is a VAG K-Line cable.
On that I've been able to do a few things, including -Getting live data on various sensors, including the parking sensors (PDC) -Clear his airbag light quite a few times - this it seems can only be done through the BMW port ; disconnecting the batter will not make the car forget. -See codes that did not throw an EML. These included ; -Cooling being outside the set paramters ; it's come close to overheating a few times due to a previous airlock. -It cannot see an engine fan ; it's long gone and some crappy aftermarket thing is there -Lambda Sensor Errors on both banks ; -Misfire on a number of cylinders ; it was running the factory plugs it seems for a very long time.
If you were closer I'd offer to check yours out.
FWIW INPA is the BMW factory scanning tool. It's clunky to use but it can be very very handy.

Sorry for the late reply, it's a '99. I've tried to get hold of the INPA software but the machine I was trying to install it to was running Windows XP and it wouldn't have any of it. Shame, as I've already got a VAG cable. I took the exhaust off today as I bought a cheap second hand one from eBay. From what I'm aware, a cat' isn't meant to look like this?! After fitting the other exhaust, I've now got a couple of exhaust leaks and the fit is terrible. The cat' is catching on the side of the transmission tunnel, so it'll need some adjustment on another day.

Thats not a cat, it looks like a pre muffler / absorption chamber. Basically a small box with a straight through perforated tube with glass wool around it.
Doesnt it have a cat further forward? Possibly in the manifold.

Yeah, I thought as much.
There's nothing else on the system apart from a backbox. It has however, been welded at some point, So maybe a previous owner removed it.

Could be worth having a look at the DISA valve as air leaks from that could cause a problem. Held in by 2 screw so easy to remove but a bit of a footer getting it past the inner wing.
