I love old archive photos, especially when they have cars in somewhere and I found these on flickr from Manchester Metropolitan Uni. Most of them aren't actually photos of cars but there are loads in the background and it's fascinating to see cars we all regard as desirable classics and retros, in their original settings. It's also very nostalgic for me as I can remember most of these scenes which have been totally redeveloped now and look completely different. Check this early custom VW. Hot VWs supposedly discovered the Cal Look in 1975, this, minus the lowered front end, pre dates it by 4 years. Disuse

Some of the scenes are proper "Ee it were grim up North when I were a lad!" stuff but great for anyone interested in history and shows how far we've come.

The lack of yellow lines, few foreign cars and the disappeared names from the high streets make it fascinating. And a reminder of my youth!
I think I started driving around 1973.......

Great pics, & link. Some memories from the 80's brought back.
Even a pic of the original walkway from the arndale to m&s that was blown up in 1996.

Also enjoyed browsing through the link. Having spent most of the '90s in Mancehster a lot of the sights look very familiar but it has changed hugely in recent years when I've been back. Not everything though. I stopped by the Toast Rack to get a 'period' shot a year or so ago.

Great pics, that link was interesting, I might have to look for something like that in my neck of the woods. Edit; found this film of some 1970's redevelopment in Exeter, stick with it through the demolition stuff. The comer Pick up(I think) in the opening shots is interesting.

Glad people appreciate them. I'm sure I've got more old photos from 25+ years ago, I just need to find them and scan them. For the purposes of this thread I was looking for things taken on the street rather than show cars but I could put some old show stuff up too, though I want to stay away from well known magazine-featured things, of which much better photos can be found.

Love the old scans. That Beetle has brought back one memory of thsoe days. There was a girl in my sixth form year who had a Beetle with the sides all decoupaged in comic books. She gave me a lift up to school once. Was pretty awesome.

Usually it's the toaster that catches fire...
So 'overhaul' in this case is 'insurance job' ? :-P

Great photos of Manchester 60s,70s,and 80s. Being born in Salford in the 60s and spent all my life here.it certainly brought back some good memories. Thanks, and a great find to show my kids what Manchester/Salford was like when i was growing up. Chris

A cool link indeed - I typed in Aldershot which is local to me and a bit down the page is a picture of your estate! Looks like it's at Wheels Day lol.
