Right guys basically iv bought a mk3 mondeo 1.8 duratec with engine light on it was really and I mean really cheap and it's a minter not a spot of rust and in panther black..fault code says lambda sensors so iv bought another one I'm going to replace Saturday. Also sounds like the cat has collapsed and rackels so due to the fact I'm going away Sunday and need the car am I ok to decat it and reset the ecu??
Any advice

I had to replace the cat on the father in laws mk3 mondeo, from memory it was only £80 from Ses exhausts so might be worth doing at the same time as the lambda. (make sure you have access to new bolts as they all sheared when I did it). We had to run his for a few months before hand with the catalyst knocked out and I can't remember it flagging up fault codes. Hope this helps

No, if you replaced the cat but left an iffy lambda in then there's a good chance of corrupting the new cat, probably what's happened to break your existing cat. Have you checked the lambda harness to make sure it's not fouling something in the engine bay???

I had a look at work and seems that a wire was broke...it'd had a new front pipe on by previous owner and he said engine light had come on after they had put it back together so I'm thinking they must have broke wire and not realised....so iv connected both bits of wire back together and reset ecu and no more light...bonus.so Saturday I'm going to knock centre out of cat and put new sensor in (iv got it so may aswel) Happy days

You don't need a new sensor by the sounds of it?
And is your sensor before or after the cat?

It's after...I've read a couple on focus for 2.0 duratec sites that if u decat make sure u reset ecu before running without one

Hmm... I don't know these engines so can't really pass comment, but if your O2 sensor is looking for a value, and it aint getting it, it will alter fuelling until it does. Would it not make your engine either run super lean, or limp mode, engine light straight back on?
In your shoes I would leave it as it is, running and working, and then buy a new cat and fit it when it arrives. Sounds like too much to go wrong if you go smashing the cat out when you don't seem to need to?

I understand what you mean from what I've read up on the ecu learns after you reset it and I would if cat hasn't collapsed inside it's making a right noise like I said iv seen it when cat calapses that much it chucks itself though exhaust and blocks it and I really don't want that also it's not showing a correct reading because the cats calapsed ...if it wasn't for me going away next week I'd leave it also ...

If you remove the cat the bank 1 sensor 2 O2 sensor isn't going to feed the correct voltage back to the ECU and it will most likely put the EML back on for a catalyst ageing fault or a bank 1 lambda loop fault either for s1 or 2.

Not sure what type of cat this has but a few years ago I had a similar one with 2 bricks inside, only the front one was broken, we took the cat off cut a square out the top pulled all the broken bits out welded it up put it back on and it even passed its mot for a couple of years after.
