My little weekend (+) project... So I decided to make an infinity mirror coffee table for my sons playroom. We are updating his room for him for his 8th birthday. It's going to be an infinity mirror with a twist! This is a super cheap build, trying to buy as little as possible. I've used / reused old screws and wood from the house build(!) Here's what an infinity mirror typically consists of:  It works by reflecting some of the light on one side but also letting some out so that you can see what's inside and the reflections...  Both of the above, shamelessly stolen from the net! From here on in, it's all me! My son is into Minecraft and computer games, so I wondered about making a MineCraft portal, but decided on a Monster escape hatch. |

I started with a piece of plexiglass (had to buy - $7) and some tinting film (mirror finish - $22!) that is about a 50% tint.  This was honestly the hardest and most frustrating part of the build! Luckily I remembered I had some application fluid from wrapping one of my cars... next time I would buy the real stuff. It got so much easier with the spray.  Far from perfect but good enough for my level of frustration! Next I grabbed an old mirror we used to have in a bathroom and an old a cardboard barrel. That along with a storm light ($17) with red LED bulb fitted (40W equivalent). Red for emergency lighting, but also because we bought a red sofa (on sale of course) for the room.  My local hardware store had an extension cable on sale ($7) so thought it would be rude not to use it! |

Dropped the foil covered plastic on top and plugged it in to get a quick idea if I was moving in the right direction...   Seemed to look okay, so decided to add some extra stuff to make it look more like a tunnel you could climb down.  Some odds and ends from plumbing... |

  I only had really bright hammerite and wanted my ladder rungs to look a little old and used, so I sprayed them with some black and then spattered them with hammerite. Next up, I used some plastic spray on the card inner section of the tube and then filler primer trying to get a rough concrete type texture. I cut the top off the tube and placed the tinted plastic on top. Next, I made a rough box / coffee table out of exbuilder plywood - with a hole in the center to house the upper part of the tube. |

 The screws are so long because they are plasterboard left overs and will be covered when the thing is finished. The wheels were $12 for the four from my local junk store.  Test fit for size - yep, Xbox controllers fit! I'm sure feet will too! Turn the light on and you get this... |

Only the first two rungs exist. The rest are reflections!
As the customer had particularly stated that 'I want to be able to put my feet on it Dad', the rough wood goes with the charm.
So the wiring was fixed inside and covering the sides and the wood covering started...
will post more more as I get it done! I'm currently $62 out of pocket, so will have to finish the thing now!

Thanks for the kind words! It's been fun building it so far. Well other than the sticky tint stuff... Funny you should mention bedrock, that was one of the first things he asked - does it stop at bedrock? I know what you mean about drugs - it's pretty trippy! Everyone that has seen it looks down it, looks under it, looks down it and under it again! Should be funnier once I get the side panels on so you can't see how it works! |

That's pretty cool! If I didn't already have a ridiculous coffee table with a tiny railway in it i'd be building something like that in a flash! That's a clever way of doing a railway build without taking up space. Yea, pretty good talking point in the living room too. Loads of police and fire engines at one end attending an incident, all have flashing lights, train has headlights, carriage is internally lit and has a working tail lamp. Pretty well detailed, never finished.. I'd put more pics up but don't want to clutter this thread unless the OP is ok with it..  Maybe you could build a big infinity mirror in the back of the Acty? Make it look huge in the bed.. |
