Does anyone know the legalities of full bt livery being applied back on to it???....or is it show use only? Any advice appreciated Dan

Great idea! I suddenly found myself fondly remembering the old grey BT vans going about.
I doubt BT will be bothered - it's not their current corporate livery so it's not as if people might mistake you for an actual BT van. I guess the old logos will still be trademarked etc but I doubt they'd take out an intellectual property case against some bloke in an old van. There are plenty of restored commercial vehicles out there carrying liveries of various companies and they don't seem to have any bother. Go for it I say! It will be ace!

Dan, BT probably have a department somewhere that could find you the old logo's. I was one of those grey van men for 13 years in your patch. I would have suggested a trip to the TSVC in the middle of Crayford but I see from google maps it has long gone. There was a 'call centre' based in Eltham, behind the old police station, up the alley on the right, someone there might be able to help. The building at the bottom is Eltham SSC, Police station is in the middle, telephone exchange is at the top in that link. You want one of the older vehicle service units as they used to sticker them up locally if I remember right. Finding one in 'reflective' material could be difficult outside BT.

My mates Electricity Board One Ton Land Rover runs the livery it would have carried when it was in use with them. I believe he wrote a polite letter to 'Scottish and Southern Electricity' asking if they would have any objections to him doing it. Obviously they were happy to let him, as he's now got a couple in period Southern Electric livery.

The worst that can happen is a letter from them threatening legal action. Besides, 99% of our fleet is Openreach liveried now, as we are a separate business......

Just do it, I very much doubt anybody will think BT are still using Mk4/5 Escort vans. Actually maybe bill them for the advertising space?

on a similar theme, what about period correct racecar livery, i.e 1980s race cars with esso, mobil, dunlop, spax and everything plastered over it ? are vinyl signwriters allowed to replicate those?

I can officially confirm Dan.
I will have no problem at all with you displaying my username up the side of your van. I won't sue.

I know there are some organisations who get a bit nowty about people putting their logos on vehicles (though I can't name any specific examples right now) but there are so many restored commercial vehicles and race cars around that have had the logos reproduced and I've not heard of masses of copyright lawyers ascending on car shows and vintage race meets so it's probably fine. As long as it's an obsolete logo (which it is) and you're not using the van for your telecoms business (I presume not!) you shouldn't have a problem. Is it this version? or this?

Most companies aren't that bothered, or even welcome it. A friend of mine wanted an Irn Bru theme on his car, got in touch with them to ask for use of the logo, they sent PDFs and Vectors of all their logo variants as well as the pantone colour for him to use!

Is it this version? or this? If it's a grey van then it'll be the white Piper logo as per the top van, very obsolete now. The white vans lasted from their intro with the red/blue Piper until the creation of Openreach where all the Openreach white vans got the multi-coloured ribbon logo with the new BT corporate logo (BT and the world in coloured discs) included in it. Going to be all change again now as Openreach is a separate company (though wholly-owned by BT) so any BT reference will be coming off their vans. I assume BT corporate vans will get a new logos but I can't see the Piper making a comeback, any more than Buzby will! :-)

My dad does traditional signwriting, not vinyls. He often does old logos on vintage vehicles, never had an issue. The issue would only come if the car owner tries to pass themselves off as a business in some way, which obviously you won't OP.

As long as it's not current, they shouldn't mind. The owner of the "Royal Fail" slammed Corsa Combo got a letter from Royal Mail's lawyers telling him to cease and desist, otherwise they'd take it further. Despite the obvious drop, it looks much more like a current RM vehicle though.

His ended up with a v8 in it, a proper useful tool.
