Need to fit an exhaust at the weekend (middle section and back box), I thought the middle section would come with some slits (as the catalogue picture suggests, see below) and id simply slide it on and clamp it up using a U Clamp, however it is just a straight pipe. Do I need to cut some slits myself? And is the U clamp the best method?

Also is it worth getting some high temp paint on the bare welds?

And no. High temp pain has tiny cracks in it to allow expansion. It will rust most likely.

Whats on the one you took off? The cat and middle are one piece (original system), so I'm cutting the exhaust off just behind the cat.

Really? That is a surprise. A downpipe, cat and middle box all in one? What car?

Hmm lookimg at google pics seems it is thst way.
You will need a collar that is slightly bigger diameter with slits to connect the two pieces.

Get yourself some of these gizmos. Especially if you ever see yourself removing the pipes in the future. You can specify them with a single diameter for butt-joints or a dual diameter for slip joints. Most are stainless.

Measure external diameter - but some digital calipers from Aldi, they're so useful. Go to motor factors and buy a sleeve, they have all sizes.

the car OD is 45mm, the new exhaust has an ID of 50mm (OD of 53mm). Most of the sleeves I can see online wont have enough give in them to fit?
I doubt the exhaust will ever be removed again the life of the car, certainly not in my ownership.

Weld it then if you take the whole thing off.
