Not car related, but it is retro. After sorting through my late grandfathers sheds barns etc I found a 1978 'S' Puch Maxi S, I've check the DVLA and it's been in the barn since 1983, and is wearing a tax disc from that year. Now I'm having trrouble starting it, apparently they can be ridden as a cycle and then started with the start lever, but this one when pedalling nothing happens, no forward movement, just the pedals spinning, am I doing something wrong? I'm expecting to be able to ride it like a pushbike! I think the procedure to get it going is this: fuel on, choke in, prime the carb until fuel drips out, hold the start lever in and pedal? but no joy. Any ideas? I'm not sure wether to keep it and tidy it up or just whack it on eBay

Rebuild the carb, it's made of about 5 pieces, flush the tank, fresh fuel, check/gap/replace the plug, is there spark? what colour? Check/gap/replace the points. If the spark is still missing or weak you'll need a new coil because they fall to pieces with age.
Probably very easy and cheap to source though, I think you'd need a 2 or 3 pronged flywheel puller to replace it though.
I seem to remember the pedals where actuated by some kind of clutch/cable pull / possibly throttle position related? as they are only needed at very low speed (to start)..

Girlfiend, who used to ride one back in the 70's, says "just pedal it and turn the key and off you go"!
Perhaps the 1983 petrol isn't as fresh as it could be, is it for sale by any chance, make a great birthday present for her.....

Small handle on the underside on the left side handlebar needs to be pulled when starting.
Running alongside with the puch and pulling the handle should also start it.
I could start my old one with a long belt that i wound around the flywheel and pulled...

I tried holding the lever in and running alongside, it sounds like it wants to start but doesn't. As it's been sat for so long strippping it down and rebuilding it might be the best option. Mind you, at 40 years old, 14 stone and 6'1" I might look a bit of a pillock riding it. Sadly I was making crazy frog noises whilst sitting on it the other day

Thank you for this. I also have one, I tried to start it a couple of years ago but had no idea how to! I might even try again this weekend. Mine is a Daimler Puch, is it a posher version?
