Freelander TD4 on a 52 plate, has poor cold starting.
According to the seller, a new pump, filters and alternator have been fitted, battery and injectors have been "tested", starts OK with a squirt of Easystart, so likely to be glowplugs? Or something much more expensive?
Is it possible to fit the filters wrongly?
And what else to check before I buy?
Thanks
Andy

Sounds like glow plugs, do you have a multimeter to test the circuitry to them?

not likely to be glowplugs unless it is particularly cold where you are, its an M47R bmw diesel which is commonrail.
best place to start is checking diagnostics for live readings of rail pressures and feed pressure vs expected values.

Funny how the phrase "M47R bmw diesel which is commonrail" puts you off a cheap motor! Thanks anyway......back to looking for Volvos as a tow car!

i owned t TD4 for ages, the BMW engine was a good motor. You need to get it on the diagnostics. Most garages wont charge much and it could be a cheap fix, i would take it to a land rover specialist myself though. Great cars, easy to drive and it will pull a house down if needed

Even if you've decided not to buy it I'll stick a reply here anyway, maybe it'll help someone in the future... :-)
If it starts well enough with a sniff of easy start, try a couple of firm taps to the area down in front of the o/s/r wheel where the low pressure pump lives, if it starts better after that it's a duff pump (very common). As has been said though, reading the fuel pressures is vital for a proper diagnosis as a duff high pressure pump isn't too uncommon (especially if it's been mis-fuelled in the past).
