Hello
Has anybody been on a holiday where you hire a classic car, book accommodation and drive around exploring the local area?
I'm thinking France or Italy, but open to other ideas. Anyone have any useful links? All help is much appreciated. Thanks.

No never in a classic, usually in bangers, but I had a holiday where we bought an old MK2 Scirocco Scala and blasted it all the way to Prague and back stopping off various places along the way.
Also had a holiday where we flew to Vietnam and bought motorbikes in the North and rode them all the way to the South.
Also had a holiday where we flew to Iceland and rented a battered old Scooby and blasted it round the coast for a week.
Had a holiday where we (there's a theme developing) took my battered Octavia VRS on a blast through France down as far as the Loire Valley.
Had a holiday where we drove up through Holland in the VRS doing all the Market Garden stuff.
And so on...
Never booked accommodation more than a day in advance (in Vietnam we just rocked up and asked around), in Iceland we looked around on various websites and went off local recommendations and booked the next night from the place we were in of an evening (so booking tomorrows room tonight). We did the same in Holland, ended up staying in folks guest bedrooms most of the time doing the same thing. Always works out! Love doing those kind of holidays!

I've always driven mine down there. Obviously a bit tricky if you don't have one in the first place though......

One of my mates did this for his honeymoon, they hired a 1960's Alfa Romeo Spider and toured round Italy, his wife got dolled up in Audrey Hepburn style headscarves and sunglasses, they had a brilliant time. It broke down once but the hire guys came out in a van and fixed it. I'll get the details off him next time he's in the office.

Austria is stunning to drive through, I've just drove back from Italy after a skiing holiday, Italy isn't particularly nice in the north. Germany isn't worth going through at all imho and France is expensive if you want to use the A/E roads due to the tolls, it cost us 80 euros.

Can you tell what it is yet? (accent a clue to where but not the now-creepy connotations) Best thing I ever did. Everyone else in the convoy had boring old Avis or Enterprise mid-size stuff and the queue for rides was ridiculous. Relatively(?) cheap considering the pedigree and the gent that owns the garage renting them (yes plural petesclassicgarage.com/) out was truly one of us... Driving down the iconic Great Ocean Road (please please google image this place) it was bliss. Admittedly it had a very conservative diff on it and was tuned for reliability not power but cannot recommend highly enough! EDIT - B*LLOCKS MY IMAGE UPLOAD NOT WORKING (drag and drop and links failing - any ideas)

Italy isn't particularly nice in the north. Germany isn't worth going through at all imho Totally disagree! Where on earth did you go to miss the beauty of Northern Italy?! Southern Germany, in particular, is also fantastic.

Lots of places in Cape Town do this sort of thing, expensive though for a more recognised "classic car". I once hired an old merc from Ackers Rentals there www.ackercarrentals.co.za, which was cheap, the old merc was a bit of a beater but it was different and didn't break down! Other companies hire out beetles and Citi Golfs. - www.funcar.co.za

As for Germany, flat, dull, uninspiring. Bavarian Alps, Black Forest, Eifel Hills, you did well to find a route home from Austria that was flat, dull and uninspiring! I'f you drove back from Austria through Germany I guess you used the A7 or A8 Autobahn, which isn't exactly ther Nurburgring (oh, did I mention that place?) but is still great to drive and unrestricted in most parts. Actually, I wrote a chapter in my latest book about the A8!

I met a group of 4 40yo guys who hired 2 Morgans for a week for £1000 each car from the Morgan factory. They were driving between the most northerly, southerly, easterly and westerly points in the UK. They were having a great time and I think that hire charge was really cheap. Yes they were new cars but a Morgan is the same over the last 50 years anyway!!

I can thoroughly recommend this company: rentaclassiccar.comThey are based in Nice, so ideally placed for some exploration. Fabrice, the owner, is the nicest most enthusiastic person you could wish to meet and the cars are maintained and prepared to the highest standard. As for routes and where to go, I find Pistonheads is quite a good resource. So many people have already been and done it and shared their photos and experiences, from the evo triangle to the Transfăgărășan!

Have finally managed to talk to my mate as we've both been in and out of the office on different days. He used these guys to hire the car (turns out it was a fiat not an Alfa) www.classiccarhire.com/Italy-Slow-Drivewww.noleggioautodepoca.eu/index.php/en/this car in particular: www.noleggioautodepoca.eu/index.php/en/lg-fiat-1501
