Back in 1998 i saw 'Lock, Stock and 2 smoking barrels' with a mate and came out of the cinema commenting that it would be good to own a mk2 RS2000 at some point. The following day we were both in a scrapyard near Paddock Wood in Kent and in the cars for sale section was a white RS2000 that was fairly well used and had been standing for a a year or two, it was all there but had a seized clutch. It was £400 and we decided to think about it for a day or two! When we came back 2 or 3 days later it was sold. £400 and i had to go away and think about it!! Also, in late 2008 i sold my 99 BMW M5 for £8000, and while the cash was burning a hole in my pocket i was looking on Ebay and saw a very ropey but somehow mot'd and driving BMW 3.0 CSL for £8000. Felt it was far too much for such a project!

That black manta GTE... In the early 90's. I even sat in it on the forecourt for ages planning on how to convince me old man how 'we' should buy it and then I just use his insurance for a bit... He even went to see it as well. I didn't try hard enough and now live in eternal misery. He did end up with a totally cut and shut mg metro turbo as it turned out, and I got a 300 quid MK1 polo.

Had few of them aswell. Few year back been looking for off road project, and remembered bobtailed classic RR with roll cage on driveway, been there for years. Eventually managed to see owner who let me have a look. It was old V8 winch challange truck with lockers on diffs, non runner and a bit rotten but hey..a project. And for £200. Week later when decided to go buy it, it was gone..to scrap man for £100. Around same time had astra needing head rebuild but decided to go and have a look at SJ410 tin top advertised on ebay for £250. Turns out to be rock solid, with nearly new BF MT tyres, rocklobster TB and internal half cage. No engine but comming with whole Vitara 1.6. Offered guy £100 more for bringing both over to my yard which was only 20 miles and asked if he want me to click buy now. He said he'll take it off straight away and bring it next day around midday. About 2pm rung him to see if hes comming, just to be told by his wife that some one clicked buy now before he removed it and had to let them have it. Went back to get my deposit and he not even opened gate..good job cos I was really....angry 5 years back found 3 door MK2 GTI 16v in Oak green, one owner low milage need tiding up £500. In Inverness. Bearing in mind I'm in S yorks thats a bit of distance to snap a bargain quick. Actually had one way ticket for Megabus and day off work sorted just to be told he sold it.

For me it is not too many.
When I was falling out of love with the BMW E36 323i I was on the hunt for a Mk1 Audi TT 225. After seeing plenty of dross for sale below £3k I gave up on that idea. As some people here will know I do love a Mini. And so turned up a 1979 1275GT. Or rather a 1330GT. It was on eBay with a reserve on it. Forgive me if this sounds familiar. Being local I went to go and have a butchers.
I was told that there was an issue with the starting of the car and that it wanted a few new bits. In short from my 4 minute diagnosis: -The starter not working was down to it being one of those annoying interia reel heaps of rubbish -The lack of fuel when cold was down to the mechanical fuel pump (simply starting the engine without the choke would cure this or getting an electronic pump fitted) -It had no inlet manifold shield between the exhaust and inlet manifold. This did not help the above point -Despite having new sills it had some tinworm on one of them ; a hole around a 5p size on an otherwise perfect sill.
Then I drove it. Man I loved it!
But I was not stupid. Some here will know that I've poured money into bad cars before. His reserve was £3500 which he eventually told me when I got there after view the car. He also said someone offered him that much but wanted him to fix all of the issues and fit in new seats etc. I offered him £2850 as the car stood, which I felt was fair ; I knew I would throw another £400 minimum on getting it right ; it would be a daily for me remember.
A week went by and with no response I bought myself a Clio 172 Cup(ish) with alot more change to spare and my God it was a minter! 2 days after buying it the Mini man asked if I was still interested. I would have been if he took my offer there and then.
In hindsight I think that was for the best. In other cases I do think "what if". But who doesn't?
Another one? I avoided buying a cheap Integrale. It was for a 4 figure sum! Man I should have taken that! But space has become a massive problem for me lately. I shouldn't really have the two cars that I do spacewise!
