Healy frogeye sprite back in 99 for pocket money, 1 owner car, he passed away and it was offered to me as I "liked messing with old cars" I turned it down due to having no where to put it.
Also I should have bought my mates rallye golf years ago when they weren't silly money. his was blue, low mileage and original but I wanted a red one

When I was 16 there was a Renault 5 GT Turbo down the street from my house. It was there everyday when I went to school on the bus. Never ever moved. I inquired a few times about it. Standard; hes not selling, its a project etc etc excuses.
Bloody love a 5GT

None ever got away from me when I was a teenager - luckily my parents have a big drive and garage. The only time my dad tried to say no was the first time ever - I was 15 when I told him about the VW Beetle in a neighbour's driveway that was in scruffy but sound condition that I'd offered 50 quid for. He told me in no uncertain terms that if I brought it home it would go for scrap.
You can imagine the surprise and choice words when first thing the next morning Dad went out to the garage to get a loaf of bread from the freezer and the Beetle was sat there winking at him!!!
Dad relented, the bug got returned to the road after I took it all apart and 2 years later managed to put 97% of it back together again! And so began an obsession...

Early 90's went and looked at a 1977 Porsche 924 Martini limited edition really nice, but owner couldn't find any of the docs, left my number and a small deposit. Got a phone call a week later saying he phoned the wrong person who came clean when he deducted the deposit off the sale price. As I didn't answer my phone he sold the car anyway and returned my deposit.
924 turbo in bronze and brown cos I didn't like colours, selling my 924s in Guards Red with cream leather and red piping due to lack of 3 point rear seat belts and not being baby friendly.

selling my 924s in Guards Red with cream leather and red piping due to lack of 3 point rear seat belts and not being baby friendly. Yeah thankfully I saw that one coming - I had rear seat belt mounts professionally welded in to the BMW whilst it was all apart and having the metalwork done and was still unmarried and sans children - just so my now-wife wouldn't have any cause for demanding its sale around now...

Back in 2005 when Cosworth's were worth nothing I had spied both an escort and 3 door sierra for sale private and couldnt make up my mind on which to have. The 3 door was big power and dark grey, the escort was blue and pretty standard. Whilst still making up my mind I went to a Porsche garage with the old man to pick up his new 911. Whilst there I got bullied into a new Boxster S tiptronic, I hated that car and lost a fortune when I traded it in for a new Evo 6 months later.
I still cry inside when I think I could have had both Cosworths for what I paid for that wibblepoo Porker

Around about 1995, I got offered a RHD Renault 5 Turbo 2 for 8 grand.
8 Grand was new car money. Got approved for the bank loan but then got cold feet as I didn't fancy having that amount of money tied up in what would be, a second car.
Yeah.... I try not to think about that one too much.

When I first moved to England in 1994 I lived in Portsmouth. on a side road near to the old town, a slightly scruffy mk1 pre-airflow Lotus Cortina had a for sale sign in the window, 800 quid. My northern housemate talked me out of it, "too much work, mate". He also usefully talked me out of a early 2nd gen Vauxhall viscount because he said it was too thirsty on petrol.
after those regrets early on, I've pretty much purchased every car after that on the spot.
still, A MK1 LOTUS CORTINA. not a week goes by that I don't regret that one. even then, I regretted it, but it was too late, it had gone.

Had a beautiful 86" series 1 Land Rover that I took off the road to get a new bulkhead in. The rebuild took a little longer than expected and I sold it for what turned out to be drinking money for the World Cup 2002. The guy promised me first refusal if he ever wanted to sell again but when I went to look for it some years later he had sold it to someone else. Always going to regret that.

When I bought my 400i I had looked at a 308gt4 track car for a little less money (7500$). I was waiting for the buyer of my 944 cab so as soon as the money was in hand I went and he had let it go for $6800 with the trailer. Argggh.

I remember about then buying a classic car mag that had a lancia stratos feature where the feature car was for sale in the classifieds for about €10,000, I was in the process of buying a Subaru Impreza for 9,000 at the time and had a good think about buying the stratos instead until my father discouraged me.

This is a 'one that got away' thankfully.
Mid 80's I was between XJ6's and saw one on the side of the road near me with a for sale sign, S2 in banana yellow. Only the colour made me think twice as the car looked sound and was priced to sell.
I went back once or twice to look at it and mulled over phoning to arrange a test drive. I worked with a guy who was also Jag mad, I mentioned the car to him he rushed out and bought it a few hours later, he drove it for a couple of weeks before the gearbox packed in. Fixing the transmission cost nearly as much as he'd paid for the car.

I turned down a chance to buy a standard mk1 mini back in 2010 for £600 as I couldn't find a way to get it home all it needed was a floorpan. Also missed out on owning a turbo morris minor and a mk2 Cortina for peanuts a few years back. biggest regret was selling my mk1 golf!

Couple of years back I passed a Nova GTE on a driveway with a for sale sign in the window, I'd passed the house loads of times before and never noticed the car there but thought he would probably want silly money for it. I stopped and knocked the door anyway just out of curiosity, the owners dad answered the door and told me the owner was out but thinks he wants around £500 for it. Even back then that was silly cheap so I left my number and told the chap to get the owner to call me when he was back.
Later that night I got a phone call confirming yes it was still for sale for £500, great I thought and shot straight up there for a look. The car was the most solid and rust free Nova I'd seen in years let alone a genuine GTE! Turns out it had been off the road and garaged since 2002 and he'd only rolled it out onto his drive to stick the for sale sign in.
I agreed to buy it for the full asking price and told him I would organise recovery for the following weekend, foolishly I didn't leave a deposit. Anyway few days later me and the mrs had a huge bust up (not car related) and she was threatening to leave with the kids etc so I didn't want make things worse by bringing another car home. When we finally made up and I gained permission for the nova, I went back to his house to apologise for the delay and organise collecting the car again only to find his drive was empty ☹️ Still gutted to this day and still hold the other half responsible. Makes it worse seeing the prices they are fetching on eBay now!

When I was 17 in late 1994 I was looking for my first car. Dad is a bit of a petrolhead too, and I was just looking for something to modify, with his blessing (and help!) Saw a Mk2 Escort Supersport on a dealer forecourt for £800. Was all set to have it until I got an insurance quote. £1600 for third party only, not even fire and theft! As parents said they'd buy the car if I taxed and insured it I had to leave it where it was...

I have two that got away from me: Someone on here offered me a swap for my mk1 Polo, with a mk1 Escort 4 dr. Why i didn't snap that up i don't know! The other was one of these: It was down in Bournemouth iirc and was under £2000 i think. Oh and it was in the A Team van colours, black, red stripe and dark gunmetal. I did the sums and had the money but by the time i'd worked out logistics it had sold It also didn't appear to be as big as i know they are, but i was probably convincing myself i could park it/run it in suburban south east london. Still wish i'd got it because it was awesome (i do have a photo somewhere in my photobuc......d'oh!!)
