I have put a swann cctv system in to keep and eye on things when I am out and about, I am sure many of you fellow RR'ers might have similar
I am normally pretty good with pc networking but I cant get my system to go through my router, I am in virgin broadband with a superhub2 router
anyone got theirs working? if so how, its annoying the hell out of me cos I bought this sytem as it promised to be easy to use with access from a pc or other device anywhere.

Assuming it's a hard wired connection have you tried logging in to it via your internet browser? if it's plugged in to your router via ethernet it should automatically be assigned an IP address (assuming your router has DHCP enabled, 99% of the time it will do). Type that in to the browser and once you're logged in to it you may be able to get it set up further.
If that doesn't make any odds have you tried setting up port forwarding, or maybe even putting it in your routers DMZ?

That's strange, if you ping the IP address does it come back with a reply? Maybe it's a case of setting it up on your PC first, then transferring it over to the network?
your routers DMZ is basically a very aggressive form of port forwarding, every single UDP and TCP/IP port is open for access. This does pose security risks mind you, so I'd stick with port forwarding if it does turn out to be the issue.

Can you connect to it if you are connected to wifi\lan on your own network?
If this does work locally but not from outside your network then it will be the firewall blocking the incoming setup, you will need to, as already mentioned, add port forwarding to the router that will enable you to connect to the router (which should usually be port 9000). You will also need to connect using your externally facing IP address which is allocated by Virgin. The swann box itself should have a DDNS setup available that will allow you to use a web type address to connect using the app but I found it a bit unreliable so used a 3rd party one built into my router.
Also be aware that there were some pretty major issues with the security on the Swann setups (but this was on older versions so maybe resolved on the later kit) where people could fairly easily get access to your CCTV box through the open port forward and then hop onto your internal LAN using the CCTV box as a router totally bypassing any firewalls in place. Because of this I use a local VPN setup which is much more secure than open ports but a bit more complex to setup (and maybe not possible on the superhub).

Chances are, the DVR isn't going to be on DHCP. Meaning that it has an address already that's pre-programmed into it and it's not looking at your router for a different IP.
Can you go into the settings using the remote and look at what address it thinks it has?

I have a Swann system. I have it plugged in the back of my router and up to the DVR of the CCTV with a earthnet cable. Works well.

You've already said you're usually quite handy with networking so i apologise if this is a stupid answer.
You have confirmed that the camera is on the same range as your network haven't you? If not have a look in the manual and find out what it is and if it differs to the rest of the network, that will be your problem. you'll then need to plug the cable directly into your computer/laptop bypassing the router, and manually set the ip of that computer to one in the same range as your camera (including default gateway) in order to access it and change the IP address to suit your network.

I took these photos yesterday to try an explain to my sister how to connect it up at her in laws house Ethernet in the back and a hdmi to the to screen I've got in the loft. That's all it should need to be online, if you have the same system as me. Then download the Swann view link app

I access my cctv via a free app on my phone. I have the latest BT router. It only worked once I set up port forwarding. I have the range for External Ports and Internal Ports all as 7050 and TCP as the protocol. Hope this helps

got it working! not sure how, I think one of the ip numbers was wrong, after an email from swann asking for screenshots of various things I spotted what could have been the problem, so a bit of jiggery pokery and me and my other half can see it via our phones on mobile data
the real test will be when I set up my work pc and see if I can view it from there, but all good so far.

Be really careful with those swann DVR/Camera setups. The admin account has a backdoor password based on the date, and there is another hidden way in via telnet. It's childs play to login to this device, and then it's now getting popular for would-be thieves to use the cameras to see if you are in or not. It's also possible to go into your network through the device and do all sorts of things. www.pentestpartners.com/blog/pwning-cctv-cameras-update/
