Right, first things first....this might be considered too modern for some. If you think that, and you're not interested, feel free to browse on by and read something that interests you. There have been a few people asking for a thread on this one, so here it is. In it's defence (if it needed a defence) it is 17 years old now, so no spring chicken, and it certainly carries it's years well. It's also interesting enough, being the top spec S Class, to warrant a thread of it's own I think.
I know I bought the Corolla and Terrano in December. But I decided, after much thinking, and a serious fleet review, to buy something nice and wafty to float about in. The Maxima is a keeper for now. I've been a bit unsure on it a couple of times recently, but it's going nowhere. It's my entry into shows, but it's currently Sorn'd over the winter. The Corolla was bought to run about in, with the thought of handing it on to Cameron when he passes his test later this year (fingers crossed). The Discovery is used by Julie as a daily work/school run vehicle. The Terrano? Well, I tried to love it, but as awesome, chunky, rare, JDM and muscular as it was, I just didn't like it. I thought I would, but I didn't. So I sold it to a Nissan nut who had been looking for one for years. I didn't even have to advertise it. Anyway, I didn't want to be left with just the Maxima once the Corolla is nabbed by Cam, so I've bought this one to be my comfy daily. I don't do that many miles these days, so I'm happy to run another big engine.
I fancied another Mercedes, as I'd always had a slight regret about selling the CL500 I had a couple of years ago.
Details on this one....
2000 Mercedes S320 (W220)
3.2 litre V6, 18 valve (M112 engine)
224bhp
Automatic/Tiptronic
103,000 miles
Tanzanite Blue metallic
This flagship level Merc was over £55k new, so it's full of kit. Very similar to the kit list of the CL500, which is no surprise really as the CL's were the coupe version of the S Class.
Sat-Nav
Dual zone Air-con & climate control
4 x electric windows
Power sunroof
Great audio
Double glazing
Auto Wipers
Auto Headlights
Power adjustable steering wheel, which raises and lowers on exit/entry like an LS400
Full heated leather interior, with multi-adjustable power switches
Auto dimming rear view mirror
Parking sensors front and rear
Cruise Control
Soft/Self closing doors (x4)
Two rear vanity mirrors
Pre-2001, so £20 a month to tax
It had a short MOT when I bought it, with a mighty crack in the windscreen, which was the first job to sort
....and I put it in for it's MOT the next day. Failed on four tyres, rear pads, a wiper and two ball joints. In addition to that, when the NS ball joint was being replaced, it was noticed that one of the nuts on the arm was actually feckin welded. So a new suspension arm was ordered and fitted. All done, 12 months MOT.
The mileage is 60k less on this one compared to the CL500, although the service history/paperwork that came with it isn't as comprehensive. There are pretty much no dents or dings on this one. A few small stone chips that have turned slightly rusty. The usual stone chips to the bonnet. Somebody rear-ended me last week, a proper thwack like, and I expected carnage at the back when I got out....nothing except for a few little paint scuffs and the rear parking sensors have stopped working. Built to last these big Mercs. The lad who drove into the back of me is paying for the respray and repair to the sensors outside of the insurance, which is canny.
Pics before and after a good old clean, clay, second clean, glaze, polish and wax, first internal valet and use of some 'back to black' stuff.........
the worst wheel, but they will all get a refurb...
Post rear-end shunt scuffs...
The old number plates (an old County Down registration from 1972 I believe) needed smartening up...
Original 10 disc changer in the boot, as yet untried...
Engine bay needs a bit of time spent under there...
Complete, original first aid kit...
So, bits still to sort.
* Suspension stays lovely and level, but doesn't go up or down by pressing the button on the dash. There is a compressor somewhere which fires up a bit noisily the first time the car goes over 28mph, and lasts for about a minute, then goes off. Go under 28mph in that first minute, and the compressor goes off, then starts up again when going over 28mph again.
* Front parking sensors need attention, as well as the rears which died in the rear-end bump and are being sorted.
* Display is showing it is a few thousand miles overdue for a B service.
* Speedo needle is sticky. Never goes up over about 50mph, and is slow and inaccurate up to that. Not a big issue, as there is a big digital speedo inside the arc in the centre of the dash anyway.
* SRS light comes on intermittently. Probably a connection under the passenger seat, as it never comes on when someone is sat in that seat.
* Wheels need a refurb. I have a mate who can do all four for £80.
* New centre caps required
* I broke the sticky up Merc badge off the bonnet at the weekend when I was drying the car off doing a sweeping motion with a micro fibre. Forgot about it! Doh!
* I haven't tried the air-con, but I was told it "needs a regas"
* Interior really needs a proper valet. The owner before last obviously had young kids, and they left their spills as evidence, especially on the carpets.
* NS rear light lens is slightly broken at one edge, and slightly cracked, so I'll replace it.
* OS front headlight is a bit misted up with condensation inside, and they both need a bit of work to clear the lens plastic
I took it for a proper run down to Telford a couple of weeks ago, and it returned some pretty impressive mpg figures for a big 3.2 V6 with 224 horses available for hire....
Smashing car.
