Hello I may be buying a Volvo 144 on the weekend. Car looks to be clean enough, I've done some research and found out about the rust issues (as with any old car), the mechanicals seem to be pretty bomb proof. I know it won't be a ball of fire with about 85 bhp/ton but I am keen to go ahead with this. Have any others had any experience or got one at the moment? Is there any pointers you can give me please? I was originally planning on decking it with some monster, staggered wheels but it looks like they don't have power steering so this is probably not a good idea. Some white wall tyres or bigger steels than normal will probably be a better solution. So, what are they like?

Generally good cars. Can rust like a sunofabitch, so keep an eye out for that! Currently i'm neck-deep in rust on a 71 144!

I've had 4 140-series cars in the last few years, rust was the only real issue with them (excepting the 144 without an engine or transmission.) Coolest was the 1968 142 with column shift autobox and B18 engine, kinda regret trading that away...

Thanks for the info mate, This is the car I'm considering. The owner is very honest and said that it has some minor rust. Doesn't look too bad from the photos that he sent me. Still thinking about it, but I have found something else that is of interest too

Late father in law had a 1971 144E when it was around 4 years old. It broke a piston - at 300,000 miles ! We rebuilt the engine and it then went onto do another 200,000 miles making 500,000 in total. During that mileage all it needed was general repairs and maintenance. Even gearbox was original. Obviously rust wasn't an issue with it being relatively young but I do admit welding the corner of nearside rear inner door jam where it joined the sill / rear arch

Great winter cars too, the heaters are amazing if in full working order, almost so good that i'd recommend not wearing synthetic fabric pants, cause they'll melt, haha

I had a 1969 145S a few years ago. Rust wise, have a look at the rear damper mounts - and the inner wings around the bonnet hinges. Mechanically bomb proof. I put a K series cam in mine, an OD box and a saloon diff to improve the gearing.
