Hi, my Toyota townace is sqeeking and on and off stiff when turning, but does not do it on gravel, have checked power steering fluid and looks to have fluid in there, thanks

Anyone know if the power steering is connected to the fan belt, a garage mentioned it was, but I had the fan belt tightened when the fan belt Was sqeeking, but didn't sort it

I don't know what the exact set up is, but if the belt is worn and sitting in the bottom of they pulley it will make a noise even if it's tight. Was the belt checked when it was tightened, with access as it is it may not have been.

I would check the belt first, or even renew it, but the pulley might also be misaligned owing to worn bearing in the pump.
The belt is squealing because it slackens and friction rapidly rubbing on the pulley.

The fan belt Was replaced last year, is there a separate one for the power steering, also there's a fluid container near the steering wheel as you open the door, at the top, this is really low, but everything is in Japanese, has anyone owned a townace and knows what this could be

If the townace is the same as the older hiaces that bottle inside the door is brake fluid.

Just been reading about the belt, if it's loose, simaler faults with my steering, will look at the belt first, thanks for the replys

have you checked the tyre pressures? low pressures will put a strain on the pump belt as well?
if it's the same as the early ones the P/S is a seperate belt to the alt and has an adjuster jsut under the driver seat, open the passenger access cover and the adjuster is over by the drivers seat side of the hole, on the early ones (85 to 91) there is a double pully on the crank, the back one runs the alt the front runs the P/S, as yours is a 91 it could be the same or not ??
