Hi all, my MK3 golf has a sloppy gear change, it struggles with 1st (I got reverse once ) and 5th. I have tried this www.myturbodiesel.com/wiki/how-to-adjust-your-vw-and-audi-manual-shifter-cables/I can't see anything wrong with the part mentioned for replacement. Before I try to aquire one is there anything else that is a common issue with the Golf 3? There is a bit of play in the shifter but not more than a few mm. The cables have a tiny bit of play too but nothing major. Any one know where I should look at before I just replace everything? The internet and most parts catalogues seem convinced I have a solid linkage not a cable. Thanks in advance.

Adjusting the MK3 Golf gear linkage is tricky, it's not as straight forward as the MK4 Golf linkage.
Instead of tinkering with your existing one, why don't you carry out the MK4 upgrade? I think it's called the "02J" shifter.

If you have cables your MK3 must either be a VR6, 16V or TDI as they were the only ones fitted with the 02A gearbox.
Its common for the plastic slider to wear or fall out completely on the shift tower/tree on top of the gearbox.
Best thing to do is to get a friend to wiggle the gear stick play, and look at the shift tower yourself as it will be quite obvious whats worn when you look at it, and replace the worn parts.
You can convert to the 02J tower, but you will also need the shift box (gear lever etc) & cables as well. And the shift box will need slight mods to fit in the MK3 tunnel

must say the o2j upgrade is well worth it , hunt down the parts and its all a direct swap , much easier to adjust and works much better as its all newer /better design
never ever got my o2a working nice

Huzzah, this is what I love about RR. So MK4 golf gear linkage complete. Sweet.
Now to change the shifter linkage I will need to remove the exhaust....

It's not quite as simple as fitting a MK4 gear linkage.
From my rusty memory you will require:
O2J shifter tower Polo Gti, Polo TDI or Lupo GtI gear change "box" Any MK4 gear lever mechanism MK4 5 speed cables and end pieces that match the tower Additionally, you could also fit an Audi TT short shift
There are some slight variances amongst the mod, a few ways to skin the cat. With a bit of reasearch you'll be fine.
I'm sure there's a couple of good write ups online, they've even got the associated part numbers.
Just google, "02J shifter mod" or "02J short shifter".

I know what the rest of the stuff is, tower is the bit that goes on the gearbox. Cables + Lever are obvious. Is this the bit that bolts onto the tunnel?
