I've just bought an old BMW from my fiancé's family following her Father's death. I've been given the documents to the car, but the back page is missing on the v5 which contains the v5c.
The front page is there to change ownership, but I need the code from the v5c to tax the car, which I don't have.
I've got a few vehicles, and I've noticed something. The code needed from the v5c is a 12 digit number. The code on the front of the v5 is 11 digit. The last 11 digits on the v5c are from the front of the v5, but with a different number at the start.
I.e. V5c. 15462847587 V5 (4)15462847587
This is exactly the same on another vehicle I own, but the 4 is replaced by a 2.
Does anyone know what this first number means? All I have to do is take the 11 digit number from the front and one extra number to make it work.

I think the 1st number refers to how many former keepers but could be wrong?

I've just found a similar thread on pistonheads and they all say just bang a 0 on the front of the 11 digit number to make it into 12 digits and it will work fine. Fingers crossed.

I think the 1st number refers to how many former keepers but could be wrong? Just been through the 10 or so V5s in my files and on only 2 of them does the number of keepers match the first digit. Only 1 has a first digit higher than 6 and that is a 7. Not saying this is a big enough sample for a statistical universe though. Steve

I've stuck a 0 in front and it's worked, all done and taxed. Annoying thing is I've got a good deal through performance direct via confused.com for the insurance and when I've selected it and filled in all my direct debit details it's said I have to speak to them to confirm it. I've used confused lots of times and it's always just let me select and get the policy there and then.

Ive had this once before, its down to the insurance company wanting to speak to you and nothing to do with confused. Most of the time you can just do it all on line but one insurer wanted to speak to me direct and ask me every single question again, just incase some details had changed in the 10 mins since I clicked a button on a computer, plus they will probably try and upsell you someting. Dan HI, It could also just be a random cross check or audit of applications. Colin

Dan You are right, they asked me every single question again, then tried to sell me some extras. Then they said I had to speak to the finance department, who wouldn't send the documents until they called me and asked me everything again.
