Hello all, I'll start with the back story. Years ago I bought a donor car, it was a complete car but never got the V5 with it. This didnt bother me as I was going to poach bits from it and scrap the rotten shell. Due to circumstances out my control at the time the car was pulled to bits and the shell cut up and chucked in a skip. Fastforward to now and I have some of the remaining parts and the numberplate, but no vin plate that I am aware of. My question is can I claim ownership of the numberplate as they can be investments and if so how?
Cheers Dan

My limited understanding is that the vehicle has to be taxed and mot'd to transfer the plate. I scrapped a 59 mini with a great plate but without ringing it was told it had gone with the car.

Yeh unfortunately to get the plate off it needs and MOT. Bet it could be done illegally but is it worth it?

Was the number plate a private registration? Or is it just a reg that was appointed to the car when new?

The law has changed recently, There is no need for a mot, Just the V5c in your name.... But they do look closely if the car hasn`t been taxed etc....for the last 5 years,
I know this because we just removed the plate from scrap Range Rover at work with no mot but a nice private plate.

^Doesn't make a difference Oh no I fully understand that. Either way I can not see how you could get the plate off of the car. However, I was hoping it could lead me into asking a question of my own. If the op was trying to use the reg originally given to the vehicle at first registration, is it even possible to take ownership of this? I've always suspected not however it is something that has crossed my mind.

I thought that was always the case? I know when I assigned my first plate in 2012 part of the paperwork said something along the lines of "the vehicle(s) must both be available for inspection where required" or something along those lines.

All the DVLA were bothered about was that it has been on the system for the last 5 years, I suppose they could want to inspect the car so a scrapped cars could be a pain, But I was surprised how easy it was to do! The Range Rover had no tax or mot but we removed the number fairly easy!

BT -We tried online but due to the Range Rover not being taxed once in the last five years it had to be via the post, But it was back with a retention and a new v5c within a few weeks, The Range Rover now has a age related plate back on it ! (Still not Moted )

Was the number plate a private registration? Or is it just a reg that was appointed to the car when new? The plate is just the original plate as far as I am aware, If I need the vin to apply for the papers then I am screwed. My intention was to get the papers so the plate would be in my name incase it became an asset one day. Guessing it would propably be a bit naughty to do this and not register the car scrapped even though it has been for years? This is a subject that I am not realy clued up on. Dan

Nobody can 'own' a vehicle registration number other than the Secretary of State. All you are 'buying' when you purchase a 'personal number plate' is the limited entitlement to display said number on your vehicle in preference to the sequentially generated number it would otherwise be issued with from new. If you choose to misrepresent this identifier, you can be fined or the entitlement to display revoked.
Unless you have placed the entitlement to display for a number on retention to disassociate it with the vehicle to which it was issued, the entitlement to display is lost when the vehicle is broken up, destroyed or permanently exported. In short, you lost any entitlement to the registration mark when you ceased to own what could be classed as the vehicle it was assigned to.

Ok cool, I think I shall just keep it hung on my garage wall and remember the old girl before she died. Cheers guys Dan
PS one last question, as I am not the registered keeper is it up to me to notify the dvla that the car has been scrapped? Or shall I just leave it as it is?

Just to clarify something about transferring VRMs off a vehicle... It's nothing to do with MoT, and I don't recall it ever being so. I think the confusion there is it has to be a vehicle of a type that needs an MoT / HGV cert. It's done by tax, the vehicle has to be taxed, OR: -its vehicle tax has run out within the last 12 months -there is no break between when the the tax runs out, and when SORN was applied. Now the website is unclear as to if that is an either/or situation, or if both criteria have to apply. www.gov.uk/personalised-vehicle-registration-numbers/take-private-number-offIn either case, for the OP it's a clear no. As for informing the DVLA, you probably should, but there is every chance they might try and fine you for not declaring it scrapped at the time. They might want a certificate of destruction.
