Has anyone got any tips on cleaning up the block face prior to refitting the cylinder head? You always see comments about how important it is for the head to be flat/should get it skimmed. If that's the case, isn't the flatness of th block itself just as important?

Scrape the worst off with a stanley blade then 60 grit Emery paper wrapped tightly round a file and a quick swish across the top to finish.
Deck surfaces don't tend to distort as easily as heads. Most issues seem to be corrosion between the bore and water jacket on the deck surface.

Thanks for the tips. In terms of places that do skimming - anyone known anywhere in Herts/Beds?

Yes it's important but you also have to remember the block is alot stouter than the head so alot less likely to warp and need a skim.
As somone else said you clean it up with a large flat file with a strip of 60grit emery wrapped over it. Use wd40 as lube and just give it a good going over until you see it picking up evenly all over. Its a good idea to use a countersink to clean up stud and water way holes and a round needle file to clean up the edge of the bores and irregular casting etc.

Your only suppost to be removing contamination and any high spots not polishing it to a mirror finish. Usually it takes about 30seconds to clean it up.

^Exactly that. Don't remove metal. You are never, ever, ever going to remove a flat uniform amount by hand, so as said there ^ you aren't polishing it, you are giving it a clean up. Gentle, gentle, gentle. Too often you see folk (particularly with softer alloys) concentrate on an area to get rid of a mucky spot and find they have made a low patch.

Also, with a long straight edge (as in a PROPER straight edge, not just "the edge of something straight") and a bright light will give you an idea of if you are in need of a skim or not. Are you sure you need one? It takes a hell of a lot to warp a block face.

Thanks for the info...
Places that do skimming was for the head, not the block. I was just curious about the flatness of the block, as you always hear so much said about flatness being important

Unless they only have a fly cutter if they can skim the head they should be able to skim (deck) the block. Block needs to be completely bare though but it's exactly the same to set up as skimming a head.

not to sound contrary or deliberately confrontational, but two people have so far recommended taking 60 grit to a machined flat sealing surface. 60 grit being jsut about the most aggressive paper you can get without it falling apart
is this definitely a thing ?

Yeah. You'd have to be really silly to make it remove material.

Yeah. You'd have to be really silly to make it remove material. Yup... The kind of silly where you wrap it over the edge of a file or something and go at a particular spot you want to clean. Though putting a 60 grit flapwheel in a grinder to it will certainly take lumps out.

If you are looking for a company to skim a head or block, these people are the only ones I let near mine. Staffed by time served old school engineers. They are in Elstow on the outskirts of Bedford. tandlengineeringbedford.co.uk
