You couldn't make this one up so thought I'd share it . I've been running my 32 style rod since May with 5000 miles of general abuse across Europe , track days and drag racing with a twin turbo Lexus v8 and manual box with a modest 8 psi and 360 hp . Having no issues I decided to go back on the Dyno to do some tweaks to the map and made another 100 hp Put a slightly larger jet in the water meth nozzle and the next pull the motor stops with no smoke / steam or any warning ? Back home and motor out , pulled the main seal plate off the back of the crank to see something sludgy looking in the main gallery . Quick prod with a screwdriver .... Yes it is a piece of rag sat blocking the oil feed to the rear main bearing . pulled the cap off and it's bin fodder Crank will live again but the ally block housing has had it . Best guess is it's had a rag stuffed in while the pump housing had been removed for some reason and not been spotted when it went together . Better check the next motor for foreign objects before it goes in !

What a rad little rod! Is it based on a Locost type chassis? I have seen people try to put hot rod bodies on them but they always end up a little "off"
Yours looks great! Thats a weird one on the rag though. Lexus v8's are cheap cheap here in Oz, I assume the same is true over there?

They were a few years back when I got mine but not so much now. Just bought a replacement for £500. Chassis is pretty much seven type with a few stiffening mods and steel bulkheads

I ought to frame the rag as it's just cost me £1500 . £500 engine £330 set of 630cc injectors as my Saab 345cc are all out of ideas at 9 psi so need to upgrade even if I don't do any more tuning £450 new clutch as the £70 v6 Camry std unit is almost on the rivets after 5000 miles although it never slipped so need a new unit built to take 500 lb ft New belt and a few odd gaskets . Even more gutting is the whole car stands me £5500 as I set myself a monthly budget of £150 a month 4 1/2 yrs ago so I had to make a lot of stuff myself and adapt scrapyard stuff so there's no fancy shiny rod stuff on it . Good example is the sidepipes which were very grotty Dax rush v8 parts that got no bids so stole the pair for £40 and found a stainless 4" - 2 1/2 stainless reducer from a stainless chimney flue place to link up to the downpipes Started with the bones of an old frame and a one piece roadster tub Always did 20-25 hrs a week and always looked at adapting production car parts rather than buying stuff .

How easy was it to build apart from measuring and the technicals. I had a half built LoCost, but gave up as I didn't have the time.

The body took the most time as I had to cut a section out between the bootlid and and rear deck and add 4" to width at the front as my chassis is a bit wider up front to take the v8 , bonnet is 5"longer than stock with a cut down grille and the front arms were re made at a different angle to put the wheels in line with the grille which meant the rack is behind the axle Center with an upside down lhd rack with Vauxhall Agila electric column as I run a decent amount of caster for self centring and pulling itself onto full lock when it goes properly sideways . Basically lots of hours rather than money

I run an mot station so used to see lots of hot rods until the 1960 exemption came in but as soon as you start building any sort of traditional rod your kind of stuck down a path of having to source certain parts to make it work and even the fairly basic ones are around 10k to build . Does have a few little luxuries like power brakes courtesy of an e30 pedal box and Saab 9000 servo /mc and A cruise control kit from a. Customer who never got round to fitting the kit on his motor home before selling it . Stuff like the doors took several weeks to finish as I had to hang them from the body not the chassis so the whole lot is removeable with a few bolts and ended up with aluminium frames with balsa wood reinforcement to keep them under 2kg I blew the budget buying the microsquirt Ecu one month so had to strip enough wiring out of scrap cars at work to build a harness , top find was the huge number of multi plugs hiding behind the centre console of a 2001 celica which covered every thing I needed and the long runs from front to rear on a few others donated the rest

Because you didn't build it the way 'proper rods' are built, did you constantly have everyone telling you that you were building it wrong. That they wouldn't build it like that, even though all of the people who told me that had never built a hotrod, or anything like one themselves. However i found that people who had built themselves hotrods looked at mine and said it was pretty cool!

Not really but had quite a few telling me the chassis wasn't up to the job of carrying a v8 despite it being pretty much the same as the Westfield and dax rush.

I've had some tissue paper blocking an oil gallery disappear down there and found it months later upon stripping the bottom end, so not surprised that rag caused havoc. Bad luck but it'll live again bigger and better.

Meh. Folk will always throw in their tuppence worth. I keep on getting people telling me I "need" to ditch my carb on my turbo and swap for EFI, that I NEED to swap my ignition for one that retards under boost etc etc. Nah I don't. It works. I'm happy. It's old skool and junk yard and does just fine!
You keep your build the way it is! It's ace! And I LOVE junkyard dogs, they are the best kind of build for me, chequebook cars are all well and good but the way you did this ticks my boxes.
