So me and my 13 year old son were talking legends He told me what a legend a certain actor will always be, RIP to that "actor" but that's no real legend in the motor world, most young lads have his legend sticker on their cars Think I need to have one made up with a real legend on it!!! I give you my real legends, anyone else care to add theirs? James hunt and Barry sheene Never really been a bike fan but this is a real legend Barry sheene

I think people under 20 have a different perspective. Their sports stars are mostly completely devoid of any sort of personality so they have to look elsewhere. Lewis Hamilton is an example. It seems the publicity people have told the talented young racing driver from Stevenage that he has to be equal parts driver, plastic gangster and twit, which makes him appear more dislikeable than he probably really is. Sheene and Hunt's places are guaranteed I think. Can't do pictures at work but my longish list would be: Boyd Coddington (though his TV show portrayed him as an ) Chip Foose Ayrton Senna Niki Lauda Colin McRae Jackie Stewart Carl Fogarty John McGuinness Joey Dunlop Richard Noble Andy Green Stirling Moss Graham Hill

Interestingly enough he looked JUST like James Hunt . You do have to wonder about his parentage ......

Surtees was an understated BADASS! What he achieved will not be repeated, the only man to have won World Championships on two and four wheels.
Tony Pond was also a motoring legend. He didnt ever win a world championship, but he had the hero moustache, and he lapped the Isle of Man TT course in a Rover 800 at an average speed of over 100 mph. That makes him a legend in my book.

My motoring legends would be (in no particular order) Ayrton Senna. James Hunt. Barry Sheene. Richard Burns. Donald Campbell. Carroll Shelby. Evel Kneivel. Murray Walker. And lastly... Steve McQueen.

Alex Zanardi. Not necessarily for motoring achievements but for carrying on regardless of what he's been through (lost 3/4 of his blood and lived). What a man! Olympic gold medals too!

for me "motoring legends" equate to who i was rooting for or screaming their name at the tele in the 80s and 90s. three names spring to mind, nigel mansell, John cleland and Will gollop. more so cleland due to my retro specialisation in vauxhall, and the fact that its more grass roots (to me) seeing "almost road cars" pummelled round british tracks inches from each other. rallying, thunder saloons in the carlton, BTCC champion in 1989 and 1995, multiple outright wins and class wins, edge of seat viewing for best part of two decade. He's far from dead, nor do i wish him to be in teh grand scheme of "legend", but that would be my vote

Roger Clark. Of whom Tony Mason (one of his navigators) said and I paraphrase, "The first time I went out with Roger, downhill on a forest track in icy conditions in a Lotus Cortina he changed into top on full throttle, I thought he was either mad or good"

Derek Bell, winning Le Mans 5 times and driving cars like the 917 has to count for something (looks quite happy in this picture)? Most of my other heroes have already been mentioned, G.Hill, Tony Pond, Villeneuve, Gerry Marshall, Hunt, Shelby, Vatenan. Then there's drivers like Roy Salvadori who never really get mentioned.
