I know this is possibly a bit too new for RR, but as the model is essentially a 90s one that just kept being produced I thought I'd see if there was any interest in it.
I've been a long time lurker and keep meaning to put threads of my other cars up, I started with this one as I only bought it this week so there isn't loads of photos to trawl through.
My VR6 is not at the stage where I'm too precious to take it out over winter. Unlike most Mk3 Golfs it is now rust free and has had recent new paint so I've decided to retire it from daily drive duties.
That meant I'd need some new wheels for winter. I was looking at estates as I just want a boot for moving wheels, dump trips etc. I almost went to see a Range Rover Classic 3.9 that had £3k of welding done but then put my sensible hat on and thought that 12mpg would be too thirsty.
I've known for years that the next model, the P38, has been trouble - electrics, engines, air suspension they have some pretty major faults but I'd been looking at the 2.5 BMW engined diesels and thought they might be worth a pop. I missed out on one two weeks ago and then started looking at estates again.
Last Sunday night I saw an ad for another P38 but with the proper engine, the V8.it was on my way to work so I stopped to see it, 30 mins later I had myself a new headache.
Every part if my brain is telling my this is a bad idea, but there's something about it that meant that when I saw it, I knew I was buying it. I think it was because it looked so sad! It has definately been stood for a while, it is filthy and covered in cobwebs. The body actually looks pretty straight though and there isnt any visible rust. It passed the MOT last week with no advisories as a bonus.
I've only done 40 miles in it, I've been away with work haven't been home to even start cleaning it, but here it stands:
First things to do:
Massive clean - I feel dirty every time I get out of it
New wheels / tyres. The wheels have either been really badly refurbed or hand painted. All the tyres are different.
Clear air suspension fault - software on the way from eBay
Get it up in the air to check underneath
