Hi all, I Have just taken delivery of my new project, a Model Y of '36 vintage It is in a bad way, but it is 80 years old so not surprising really, It is a bit out of my 'comfort zone' but the wife and i decided to get one to restore/mod etc after we were give a load of old photos from a family member, in one of them it shows my wife's great great grandmother and her daughter posing in front of their new car, a model Y. Here is the pic... and here is our project... as you can see...there's a bit to do ...

Wow, you really are missing a few bits and pieces here. But I guess you knew that already :-) This will be an interressting build. Are you going to keep it original, hot rod or slightly modified as in modern brakes, engine etc.

yep there's a lot missing, but i do have all the fenders and the engine cowling, plus the front grill. Also a few boxes and bags of stuff came with it, i have to root through all that lot and make a list of whats there and not there. Plans are a bit of 'modernising' to start with, hydraulic brakes, better springs and shocks, better engine and 'box, but try to keep it looking original i think... maybe . First things first though, i need to get it all stripped down and into my workshop for some serious body and chassis repair

Very nice mate, could you not use the running gear from a Sierra or something to make it useable every day?

sridgett sierra running gear wont do as it uses mcphereson struts and there will be no where to mount them, no wings etc, i'm looking at either a) viva dampers or coil-overs to replace the lever arm dampers, b) a viva HA clip or something similar, or c) fabricating my own double wish bone / coil-overs set up. something like that anyway, but chassis repair is first task, then i will see what its going to take to alter the suspension, wether its chassis mods to fit a clip, or brackets/mounting points to fit coil overs and keep the existing set up more or less. It's a big learning curve for me, it's gonna be hard...but fun

MX5 may fit the bill with the suspension, plus a nice drivetrain package to boot. The ideal donor?

Bookmarked. Nice. Looks like it's had a bit of 60's-70's modding in the past going on the gauges fitted. As Rich said, MX5 would be a good start. There's a Morris on here using MX5 bits.

small update, due to trouble with registering the old girl and not finding a way around the DVLA rules as yet, the restoration will go ahead 'un-modified' ...well for the most part, there are a few things i can do to the chassis, telescopic dampers, panhard rods etc... Anyway, the strip down commences.... body off Then all the running gear off There are a few areas of concern... Looks like i will have to replace both rails completely, at least the crossmembers are good. The front section of the rails are in pretty good nick, I'm guessing the reason that area was painted was because they were easy to get to, added to the fact that they were probably liberally coated in oil/grease during the cars life as being part of the engine bay. The section of the rails that were under the body were less accessible and not looked after so well, the body itself was like lace on the bottom half, mixed with inch thick filler i knew it was bad but most of it was held together with crud and rust, the actual floorpan was in a terrible state, i didn't have to cut any of that really, i just pulled it off. I didn't take any pictures at the time, I will post some up when i come to renovate them, so you have some before and after shots. So now it is in bits and stored neatly round the back of my house ( so neighbours cant complain about the heap of rust on the drive ) and work will commence shortly on the chassis, I will have to search up a steel suppliers in my area that will supply good 'C' section for the rails as i guess no one out there produces new rails for the 'Y'. I'll let you know how I get on, hopefully i'll get some more done before Christmas

transverse leaves, A arms, torque tube, would it need panhard rod ?
or are you redesigning the suspension as a whole?

Wow thats not a lot of chassi even before the tin worm took hold, i think your alowed to close channel chassis (to make box section) and still retain full points under the 8 or 16 point system. Dan

darrenh The suspension is staying pretty much the layout i've got due to rules in restoring, but panhard rods can be used, as can telescopic dampers. I'm looking into using coilovers, if they are allowed, if not de-cambered transverse leaf springs will be the way to go logicaluk I'll look into the regs regarding boxing the chassis,it would make it a good deal stronger as you are right the original chassis is weak without the rot. I have to make a jig first to keep it all in line and true, this is going to be a long slow job. grizz a lot of people are saying that! It's gonna take some time, I doubt i'll be coming to the RR Gathering 2017 in it
