I'd probably go with the RR classic and bury my head in the sand about potential (and actual) problems. They just have something about them that the others don't. Can't quite pin down what it is but they always strike me as being a bit sort of special, a bit like old P5 & P6 Rovers and old Triumphs. Bury my head is my usual shortcoming when deciding what car I need. I agree that the RR classics have it. I'm not sure what 'it' is but they have it. Always fancied a p5b saloon. Or Sd1 vitesse. Is an Sd1 sensible? The dog is a collie so with my sensible hat on any old estate would do the trick. Something like a Mondeo. But christ they're bland! Bland and fwd. Which is even more bland so pointless getting the ST version too. Whatever I get it'll have to hold my interest or I'll just end up abusing it and getting rid. Some of these old beamers are quite nice. And roomy in the back. Was also looking at impreza wagons. Bit chavvy though eh. I'd love a series land rover but they are pretty harsh to drive any distance and not great on the big roads. Rugged though. I'd like to see the dog chew through one of those! The thing about the RR and discos is that they have a fair bit of grunt and there's a good amount of them that have been converted to lpg. Which handily seems to reduce their value. Most other things I'd be looking at for the the power I want and economy I'd be looking at a diesel. And that just wouldn't do! You wait. I'll end up getting a RR that has a 200tdi or something in it

We squeezed four people, a collie, and a week's worth of luggage into a Saab 900 a couple of times. A roof box helps. Also fwd but well over 200Bhp can be had very cheaply.

Gotta be a Jeep grand cherokee! Does anyone have any experience of these? I am taking the boxy 90s ones. They are so cheap and look great but I want to know why they are so cheap!

Had a rrc 3.5 on LPG auto and it was dog slow. Sounded nice but I suspect like most v8's over 60k miles, it had a round bar camshaft. Body sills were rotten and I accidentally torched welding it up. True (but scary story...).
Replaced it with a 2.2 lwb frontera. A great car that was better in nearly every way. Faster, better on fuel, better equipped, nicer to drive. Eventually the mains went on it, with low oil pressure. Still ran ok, just run out of thick oil to keep it quiet! Exhaust manifold cracked on it and the hg went towing the rrc over the bridge. Easy to work on though.
A mate bought a 3.2 v6 lwb frontera on gas and said it was great in LPG and a rocket with it!
Had a 300tdi disco 1. A bit sheddy so not precious about off roading it. Bought with hg and suspected cracked head. All sorted and it gave good service.
We've now got a disco 2 4.0 on LPG auto. Does about 13 mpg on gas so high 20's equivalent around town. 15mpg on a run. Nice to drive, look classy, torquey, quick off the mark but not exactly fast.

That is way overpriced. There was a mint 4.0 that went for £550 tonight. My finger was hovering over the bid button but I am spending money on getting my MX5 through the MOT this month.

putting aside for one minute the trend of "what about this massive old vehicle". we have a dog and have had 3 consecutive vehicles kitted out for a dog over the last 10 years. dog guards and tailgate guards, anti slip mats, travel bowls, you get the idea.
in all those vehicles when the dog is present cargo basically ends up on the back seats, there's always going to be a compromise, dog or camping equipment. unless we start getting stupid with pickup based crew cab vehicles not sure what to suggest?

Just happened upon a 2door rangey classic V8 during my misadventures today, in a rather fetching beige colour. Have been told it is for sale, though price unknown! Having oggled it for a while it is a handsome brute.

I have owned over the last 10 years a LR series 3, Defender and a tricked Disco 1. Also had 3 Jeep Cherokee XJ'S and a Grand Cherokee. As said, the LR's were rust prone and the replacement parts were often cheaply made leading to continuous replacing of parts. Jeep parts are a bit dearer but the trucks are way more reliable and enjoyable to drive. The old XJ (boxy type) are not as big inside as you may think so you may want to look at them before buying anything online but the Grand Cherokee would suit you well!Having said that, the XJ is a brilliant truck and great fun. Generally stay away from the diesels if you cannot be sure of its service history and the gutless 2.5 petrol. Go for the good 'ol 4litre inline 6 on lpg and you are sorted. You can get the 4.7litre V8 which is a great motor but if running on lpg, make sure a decent system is fitted as the V8 and a mediocre lpg system don't always get along!

Cheers The problem with putting the camping gear in the back is the camping gear doesn't fit in the back and the dog goes mental in the back seat and annoys the curse word out of me. All the excuse I need to get a massive old vehicle. Its not something I'll need to use every day but when we do go camping it'll be nice to have more space and not worry about getting stuck if the campsite turns into a bog. I think it'll just be a handy thing to have. The frontera is a good shout. cheap, plentiful but I've heard they're not the most reliable A jeep is also a good shout. Cheap and they can be made to look pretty good too quite possibly a little bit overkill on the subject of overkill Looks good though doesn't it! I'm also very tempted with a sierra estate. With the right bits you can make a cosworth estate. For much less than youd pay for an actual cosworth. Or go for a more sleeper look I'm not planning on getting the new dog car until around march so plenty of time to make up my mind

How about a LWB transit connect or VW caddy 5 seater. Both are pretty tough and cheap to run
both are pretty easy to uprate with focus or golf parts..

You can probably pick up a estate for less than £800 . I'm betting you could get a v8 ford and box in there for less than a £1000 , I'm pretty sure the bits to rebuild one are cheap as chips . Just saying like ,,, cough .
