I'm on the hunt for a 50 mile a day daily driver. I love my little old Nova and I loved driving her for a faultless 22,000 miles last year but I want her to become a proper show car now. I f****** hate newer cars and I'd quite like the idea of a retro(ish) daily capable of 50mpg+, a TDi of some sort perhaps. Does anyone have any suggestions for a retro daily? Extra points for any suggestions that would look cool slammed too

getting 70mpg from my mk2 1.7D astra at constant motorway speed, 40mpg in 100% town
thats calculated by filling the tank, resetting the trip, driving till tank is empty, refilling tank. then dividing the mileage by that "refill" amount.

Hmm...
Even though my show car is Vauxhall, I never considered Vauxhall as a retro commuter. I have a mk4 Astra 1.6 8v, drives really nice, low mileage, well looked after by previous owners etc... But it only does 38mpg if I'm lucky!! Will have a luck into the Isuzu powered Vauxhall shonk as an option, cheers!

I don't fancy the Peugeot/Citroen particulate filter issues of buying one second hand :/

Earlier Peugeot/Citroen then? XUD engines are pretty bulletproof.

My old 1.7 TD Cavalier with Isuzu motor did an average 48 MPG for the 2 years I ran it, mostly rural and motorway work. I paid £200 for it, spent next to nothing on it and sold it for £325. I still have 2 2.0ltr Automatic Petrol Cavs, they are not as economical as the diesel was, but they suit my driving style better. Still make 40 mpg at a constant 85 on the motorway though. One cost £155 in 2004 the other £400 in 2006. Thats what I call cheap motoring. Steve

Mk2 Golf 1.6 GTD. Brilliant car.
Or if you want to go a bit newer the mk3 diesel is a solid motor, just watch that rust!!!

What is your budget? Easy to lower and they look good on nice wheels. Simple mods

My old shonk. Did somewhere around 80k miles in that car. Most of the problems it had were made by me, other than its insane desire for new alternators. 50Mpg most of the time, personal best was 64 which translated to 800miles out of a tank or thereabouts. Ran on veg. Rode like terrible. Good cars though
