Hi all.. i have been a member for years but have not posted for a long time, finally got something worth posting(hopefully). i bought this frontera last week and i am very happy with it,ive been after one for years but its hard to find one in this condition which is what i was after.. i don't know a great deal about them mechanically so any help would be great! so far the only faults i can find is play in the steering and a strange whizzing from the rear diff?

Not a Bad 4x4, check rear diff plate as they tend to go a bit porous and leak. also make sure the heater blower works these are a common problem and tend to let you down when you most need it. and check rad top hose these are difficult to get replacements. when i had mine the best i had out of her was 24Mpg, i wouldnt mind a Lwb but put of by the 2.5tds's
Only Lift it if you intend using it off road where you Might need the clearence,

thanks..ive just changed the rear diff oil and everything looks okay there, heater seems fine too.i will check the radiator hoses tomorrow. i was only thinking of giving it a 2" lift nothing silly, just to give it a bit more presence if you know what i mean..
why would you advise against lifting it?

I actualy rather like these, they actually look like a 4x4! My folks had j reg (in that lilac/pink metalic!?!) one of these back in the day, rear roof leaked is my sole memory oh and apparently roof weighs a tonne when trying to remove it! Nice to see one!

I've got a soft spot for Fronteras. My mate's parents had a grey LWB one as a 2.0 16v a few years ago... oh the fun we had in that.
Congrats on the purchase, seems like a decent car

Before moving onto Discovery's we had one to tow a horsebox, it was fine. I took round a AWDC course on Salisbury plain without getting stuck.

I had a dark grey one just like this. A series with leafs at the back. 31s fit easy, Great off road, simple mechanics and suprisingly good mpg (26 average). I daily'd it for 18 months and 22k without any issues.
It was laid up for a while and that caused the waterpump and powersteeing hose to spring leaks but me and a mate still drove it down to the alps had an epic couple of days trying (unsuccessfully) to kill it offroad in the mountains and then sold it for what I paid for it to an ex pat.
Very jealous of your purchase looks like a good one.

Always had a soft spot for these and while the Sport loks good, I'd end up indulging myself in the goliath V6 if I was to buy - like you say in an earlier post, they seem to have presence. Looks tidy, looking forward to updates. You have an extra 'U' in Vauxhall btw.

hi..thanks all for your replys! sorry not been on since(kids and work).its a lovely truck and seems to have been very well looked after,i do have one issue that is annoying the hell out of me though! the rear diff seems to be making a whizzing noise,i didnt notice it on test drive as it was in bournemouth and i couldnt go over 20mph.. the question I'm asking is does this mean the diff is knackered completely?or could it be a brearing replacement or something i can do to put it right?I'm pretty mechaniclly able so I'm not fazed by doing the work but i just don't know a great deal about diffs.
any help would be great!
cheers

aqssuming you have oil in it, then for sure you have a bearing issue. is it louder in one direction, i.e when under power but quiet when you lift off the engine and over-run ?

i changed the oil and it made no difference at all.it starts at about 10mph but dosent really get any louder with speed,it sort of dips off as you go over bumps but other than that just constant. its not a droning noise more of a whizzing noise if that makes sense?what makes me think its an incased bearing is that the oil change made no difference what so ever?

Apart from the engine I don't think there is much Vauxhall in a Frontera, they are a re-badged Isuzu Wizard which I believe is much the same as a Trooper, I can remember going off roading in a mates sport and it amazed us with how good it was, on a particularly slippery hill a Vitara with off road tyres was struggling for grip and we cruised past it in the Frontera, and that was with road tyres on, one of which on the rear was bald!
