I bought my first buggy when I was 18 - £400 for a well sorted SWB Mk1 GP with full wet weather gear and a fresh MOT. The price tells you how long ago that was!
LMP14K. Loved buggies ever since and this week I bought buggy number 6, over 30 years after buying the first one.
I have always regretted selling it, according to the DVLA it hasn’t been taxed for many years and isn’t SORN’d so I guess it is no more.
A few years later I owned a red Manta Ray Q718NTR which had been sitting in a guy’s garage unused for quite a few years.
Later on I had this GP - CVX492B, it was black when I bought it from a guy in Tolworth. I painted it lime green.
This is another of my old ones - 741UXG, a blue GP. I bought it from Pirbright in Surrey. It had the reg number 373EXM when I bought it. It has changed hands a few times since I owned it I think and is currently for sale again. I was very tempted to buy it back!
My most recent before the buggy I bought this week was this orange GP - SBF462D, It was yellow when I bought it from somewhere in Wiltshire. The day I bought it home there was the most horrendous snow storm, not ideal weather for a buggy owner!
Last year I sold my Chevy, which freed up some cash and a space on the drive and I’ve been thinking about buying another buggy since then.
About a week ago I decided I ought to get on with it if I wanted to have a buggy for what might remain of our summer so began looking on on-line.
I looked at a few buggies on-line and missed out on a couple which went quite quick and was resigned to putting some miles in to view some of the ones advertised when this one popped up on Gumtree. It was literally 2 miles from where I live.
A quick call to the owner and I was there 10 minutes later. Another 10 minutes after that and the deal was done. I owned buggy number 6.
The owner said it was a GP Mk1. Its registered as a VW GP sports convertible but I’m not sure it is a GP.
I don’t know enough to be sure so would welcome your opinions. Could it be a Fibre Fab?
Not that it really matters what it is, I love it already!
Only had the buggy a few days and been busy at work so not had chance to do much to it, but the first thing I did was order some new number plates – pressed steel black and silver ones to replace the white and yellow ones on there now.
Only a small change but they all make a difference to the overall look.
Fingers crossed for good weather this week!
