You lot probably know this scenario all too well. I own a 86' Volvo 740 turbo sedan. it's far from nice but it does it job pulling trailers and engine blocks around fairly well. When I started looking for a successor for this car, something slightly bigger, possibly a van, or a large station wagon. I took a dive in the wonder world of car sales sites, and ended up with the exact opposite from what I was looking for. I now own a 1982 Autobianchi A112. (in my country the brand is Autobianchi, the type is Lancia A112 for some reason) The previous owner said it didn't run, but it had MOT, wasn't that rotten on the typical A112 spots as it has been taken care of many moons ago, and the engine was rebuilt by owner before him. So this morning I took off a 100 mile trip to check the car out. Turned out the ad was completely honest. Engine looks recently rebuilt, all hoses, rubbers, brake cables, it's all new. A 100 mile trip back, and another 200 mile trip up and down with the Volvo + Trailer and it's home. I didn't actually expect it to be any good so I didn't bother grabbing a trailer the first time. Couldn't let it alone so started screwing with it immediately. I love the looks of that forward flip hood so much! Wasn't getting fuel by the looks of it (spark was fine). So put a external tank on the carb and it fired up immediately. After 30 ish seconds of running a farting sound came out of the fuel pump and it started blasting fuel trough the engine bay (didn't really think that trough, was convinced the pump was broken) Putting it all back together It runs fine but the accelerator pump was leaking really bad. Some investigation made clear the membrane is garbage and I need to find a new one to get it to stop leaking again. Small setback, but it could have been way, way worse! As probably already noticed, the paint is absolute garbage, so that needs sorting and the interior isn't much better either: The vision for this car lies in the neighborhood of the Chardonnett rally cars, for example attending to the Monte Carlo Rally back in the 80's. I really dig the vintage rally looks on these models so it will probably end up a little modified here and there. Can't wait to get this Italian stall... Minihorse? back on the road again!

Nice car fellow dutchman! I was looking into the A112 before I bought my MG! From what I have heard these are pretty fun cars to drive, I hope you don't have to do a lot of welding on it!

Thank you! The rust isn't too bad for this type of car since one of the previous owners has taken good care in protecting it from the corrosion monsters. Inside of the doors and roof for example is covered in a oily protection coating, and the common a112 places (strut towers & floor behind rear seats)Has been previously taken care of. Could do with some touch-ups but nothing major. Prediction is that the welding can be done this weekend. The part behind the front bumper has some work, about 3 inches of sill is rotten and the rear corners behind the arches are gone. Arches themselves, surprisingly are still quite solid. Anyhow, back to the pictures. So this Monday my dad went to a Lancia/fiat/abarth specialist in search of an accelerator membrane. Succeeded, put it in and no more leaks (I was at work so didn't got any pictures here sadly) But the maiden voyage was a success! It's quite quick for just a base version and the handling isn't disappointing either. Driving it trough the country side as a hooligan everybody is pointing and laughing. Missed driving something fun and unusual. Occasional checks for leaks had to happen: Next was pulling off all the bumpers and plastic to check for rust. Wheel arches were less bacon than I expected. Damage report: Rear corners behind the rear wheel arches. Status: BACON 2-3 inch section of sill. All the mounting holes for the plastics. Redo a small part of the floor under the seats and a piece that needs redoing in the front of the car behind the bumper. Last but not least. An Autobianchi without a flat black hood is unacceptable, so that had to be sorted immediately. Trying to get the welding done this weekend and start prepping for paint. I need some fast progress to keep interested. Already have too many non running project cars.

Thanks lads. Nah I'm staying with the original engine, it's freshly rebuilt so I don't really see a point in swapping it for a abarth right away. Not much progress here. Still rust busting, the mate that was gonna paint it is going on holiday the next two weeks so not in a rush either. Please take note that I'm not a panel beating wizard, but I'm quite proud of this one it's all eyeballing and whacking zincor sheet metal till it fits. Still need to finish the other side and the front valance. Oh, and I bought some wheels for cheap. 13x6 ET13 BMW BBS Mahle wheels. Needs a millimeter from the center bore, wobble bolts and sticky tires. Almost perfect offset for these standard wheel arches

Good stuff! You have to love something that's a bit different to the norm. That looks like a real fun drive, keep up the good work.

I like that. Especially like the idea of a rally replica. I'm all for something different. As an ex 740 owner I like the tow car as well. Can't beat a 740 on Dracos.

Yeah they are really simple, couldn't believe all of the bolts just went out without resistance. And everything is nicely threaded. No fiddling around trying to grab nuts in places you can't even access like on some German cars I owned for example. It's a delight working on these things. Only driven it once for so far but it's cornering ability's surprised me for a 34 year old small car. It's feels glued to the road when you keep pushing, even on curse word tires and stock suspension

Got some more work done, A phone died in the process so no documentation of the rest of the rust-busting. Used a friends sheet metal hammer set and a sack made of duct-tape filled with sand. May sound weird but it works really damn well shaping 1.5 mil plate. The front valance and the rear corners were completely rusted out, and since replacement panels for these cars are too much effort to locate It's all shaped by hand. So back to the pictures: Got some 70's/80's NIB bullet style mirrors in the mail. Since mounting them on the doors is way too common; Can barely see anything in them, but everything for the looks! So back to the actual progress on the car fixing up the corners Prep & Prime Beige it is. It's actually registered as being beige so I just went for it, car will be resprayed inside and out later anyway) Aaaaand I ran out of daylight. Fender Quick shot of the man and the machine during a little break after neighbors complaining about the paint stench, oops! Still needs a few more coats, original color is still showing where the paint isn't applied thick enough. Guess it's the perks of using cheap rattle cans. Did turn out pretty good though, prep is everything. Even with cheap stuff you can get a decent result. Now it's waiting for some free time and decent weather. It won't last for years, but at least it looks better than the worn out blue shade it had.

Good looking car!
Those mirrors: See if you can find convex mirrors to put in them. I have a pair of similar mirrors on my MGB and they were useless with plane mirrors. With convex mirrors you can see better than with door mirrors. Motorbikejumbles are a good source.

Yeah your car inspired me to just rattle can it at this point. I used the 2 euro ''action'' Spectrum paint too, 8 cans gone and got 8 more to go.
Not using their clear varnish since I've used it on mopeds in the past and it's garbage. Their primer isn't that great either, but I had some quality cans of beige filler/primer for the base.
