Need to cut out a bit of rusty floor pan from my BMW... On the bottom of the bit I need to cut out there are 2 metal studs welded on which the brackets for the brake pipes screw on. Anyone know if you can buy these (they are a kind of "self tapping" thread for plastic rather than a fine bolt thread). What's "best practice" for replacing these?
I did wonder if I could just bolt them through the panel rather than weld something on?

They're pretty rusty so don't really want to attach them to my nice new bits of metal :-)

are they stud?
If so drill a hole through the panel, insert the stud /cut off bolt so it sticks through fractionaly and weld it on the other side. You can then grind the weld back and it should pretty much disapear leaving a stud sticking out where you want it.

Drill a through hole and insert and weld in a countersunk head machine screw

If it can be fixed with a hammer, then it must be an electrical fault

You can get 'blunt' self tappers, generally used on injection moulded plastic parts. They're about the same size and pitch the pins you refer to. I'd get some of them, drill a pilot hole, screw it in from the back side then tack word the head to keep it in place.

Thanks guys. After a bit of googling those blunt self tappers are called "type b" screws, they look spot on.
