Whats the deal with polishing fresh celly?
How long should I leave it? Months?
It wont need flatting as I'm getting a good, flat, shiny gun finish. Just a bit of a polish up.
I know your supposed to leave it quite a while before putting any kind of wax on.
Best compound? Pretty sure ill be able to just go in with some kind of final compound and give it a quick mop.
Thanks.

A couple of weeks, some 2000 grit wet and dry followed by g3 and then polish works for me.

I've used G3 for years but recently got given some 3m super cut and it's a lot better on new paint , three grades and much less mess than G3 with a mop . Black sponge head and water spray I did my bike in gloss black and it smoothed it out a treat . If you have a da with a sponge intermediate pad you can use trizact pads in 2-5000 grit to make a start on getting the panels flat and they don't clog like paper and block does

I'm not planning on needing to flat the paint. I'm getting a properly flat high gloss gun finish.
Mopping it will just be a final tidy.
Ill check out both products, thanks.
The main thing I was unsure about is how long to leave it to harden before doing anything.

Hi, Cellulose does tend to sink so you may yet have to flat it.

Maybe, yes. We'll see.
I'm not after glass flat anyway. New car paint finish would be good enough.

How long would you expect celly to take to do all its sinking?

Hi, As kevins says 2 weeks, you could get away with a week but still may have to do it again.

Thanks. There will be no rush to polish it so a couple of weeks will be fine.

Ive got this all painted now, its only needed a little flatting. I'm not after perfect either.
Ive give it a quick 1500 and will give it a bit of a go over with 2000, then mop it with G3.
After that, any recomendations on any final polish and protection?
I'm wondering if its worth going over it with anything after g3 and wondering how long I need to leave it before giving it a wax.
Thanks.

Whenever I have painted anything in celly, I have left it a couple of weeks before doing anything to it. Never had a problem doing it that way. I would suggest it might be worth waiting a month before waxing though, as it is the wax which will trap solvent and need to trouble further down the line.

I know its best to wait but couldnt remember if I needed to wait a few weeks or a few months before waxing.
Not much info online about it.
I'm flatting/polishing a bit early, most of its been on nearly a week, but I don't have time to wait any longer.
Obviously I can wait as long as I need to before waxing though.

To be honest I've never had a problem flatting days after applying the paint, yes there is a risk of it sinking if it has been put on heavy, but I can't say I have suffered that scenario. I only ever paint in celly or 1k acrylic. With the dry air (in oxfordshire at least) that we have had the past week or so, I think you'll be just fine. Of course the main issue with home spraying is there are far more variables, like ambient temp and hummidity to contend with. You might find that if the good weather continues you can wax sooner.

I second the 3M recommendation over G3. It's far less messy and dusty and with something like Fast Cut + it starts off cutting well and breaks down well enough to finish on its own unless you are after a detailed finish. I revived this used Fast Cut + and that alone. It was on the flat side when I got it: Yup, I should have covered the bumper!
