ChasR A bloke I know on TIPEC was saying that his 986S cost around the same per mile to maintain, compared to 40p a mile over his 944!
Regarding the oil, do people recommend 10W60 for these now? Opie would recommend a 5W40 and seem to think 10W60 is the work of the devil for road cars unless specified by the manufacturer. I guess such advice probably also causese problems.
That was me, probably not a truly fair comparison but the Boxster running costs were high.
Ignore Opie he is just going by Porsches guidelines. He doesn't have to fix broken cars.
Barry Hart @ Hartec in Bolton has set a production line up to fix the M96 & M97 engines. He will only warrant engines he replaces if they are serviced using Millers Nanotech 10W/60. Others in the US have also done extensive research & have found that these engines need heavier oil.
Porsche recommend a thinner oil because A. They'll be referring to new & near new engines. B. thin oil gives best fuel economy, therefore low CO2 level. C. They don't have to carry the can on warranty although they've extended the warranty you can buy out to 15 years. D. Once the car gets older its oil requirements change.
A friend has an immaculate 38K 997 07 plate, last year it started using oil, only a little. On borescoping it Porsche found it had bore scored no 6. The ensuing rebuild bill under warranty was £10K or so to Porsche & the owner paid around £3k for some other bits that Porsche don't cover.Such things as bearings, oil, coolant, the non-scored pistons etc.
Hence my 986S ran 15W/50 Comma Motorsport & ran quieter & better on it.
