I'm in the middle of putting the rear suspension together a Austin a35 van, I was going down the route of de cambered leaf springs but I am going to struggle to get the van low enough without using lowering blocks too. So the option of fitting a 4 bar has been looked at. I do have the luxury of a high floor and a flat vertical panel behind the seats which will be helpful for mounting brackets. I think I know how to align the bars, logic says parallel, but something says I need to pay attention to the theoretical intersection of the top bar to the front axle to provide squat? under acceleration ?

Atmo V8 Power . No slicks , No gas + No bits missing . Doing it in style. Austin A35van, very different------- but still doing it in style, going to be a funmoble

I'm interested in this too, I've read tons about it and there are so many variables it's confusing.

Fred puhn how to make your car handle is an old American book with a great chapter on axle location with loads of pictures or layouts with roll centres shown and different bar layouts , il find my copy and take some pics later . P

No problem. That welder looks good. Can ask our welding supplier what he could do one for if you like ?

not heard it called a 4 bar arrangement before? i know of 5 link from rallying.
4 trailing links to do the fore & aft location and prevent twisting, plus a panhard rod.

You can find ton of info on anti-squat geometry looking on pro-touring and offroad forums, specially the American ones.
But it is easy to overcook it.
IMHO Just go with the longest equal length (top/bottom) arms you can package at the rear and keep them parallel. An A35 is lightweight and doesn't have silly amount of engine and brake power that you should be worried about too much dive and/or squat.

To be honest, I think you're missing a trick if you go for equal length bars, or a parallel 4 link with a panhard. A panhard is rubbish and unnecessary. On 99% of street cars an unequal length triangulated 4 link or even a 3 link with a Triangulated top wishbone will be superior, easier to package, lighter, and simpler.

Really depends on what you want to do with the car, for pootling around the street a 3 or 4 may well fit the bill but it would not provide enough adjustment in roll centre location for any circuit work. The 3 would put torsional loads into the axle casing, not good at all (especially for drag starts)plus that single centre joint needs a lot of thought. As for lighter and simpler? 2 extra brackets (1 in the case of the 4 link) and a straight rod are hardly complicated and 3 and 4's are definitely not superior to a 5 link be it Panhard Watt or Mumford.

Well, I have now ordered a 4 bar kit for the back, plus I also have a Watts Link sitting in the corner of my garage, I did look at the Mumford link, but its a bit of overkill for the street, I dare say I will be asking more questions when I am fitting it all together. One advantage of losing the leaf springs is weight, being a van they are 11 leaf, and are not light. It will also allow me to run bigger section tires, I'm not too keen on the amount of stretch they have,
