This is the mess I've made. Bits of garage and metal from the garage door hammered into the ground to keep it supported. I need to add more supports though. Filled the side with all the broken rubble etc and will now get the soil from under the car and fill up the side on the right. I'll do a slabbed base for the garage and then use type 1 gravel and fill the rest in. It's quick and cheap and is more than fine to park a few cars on. It does look like a mess but should be ok when I've done a bit more. Hopefully lol. Generally if you use 40 or 75mm crushed hardcore its cheaper than type 1 products. Depending on how deep you need to fill wacker in 4inch layers. Sorry if you knew this.. Cheers. I'll look into that, I've no idea really. I found some gravel that was £31 a tonne, dunno if that's any good. I'm just having ago.

Is that with delivery? Our 40 mm crushed hardcore is around 15 per ton plus delivery.

One thing i would say is don't forget to add a damp proof membrane on the floor. Basically plastic sheeting. This will stop any water seeping from below.
I built a double garage by myself and yes it takes an awful long time but its a great learning curve. However taking your time now and thinking about what you are doing will benefit you hugely later on.
don't rush it, once its up and built you CANT go back.
Take your time.

I don't want to piddle on your party or anything, but I speak from experience. Be very careful buying sheds etc from eBay, I bought a large shed for my baseball club from there and the rubbish that arrived took weeks of work for us to make useable, same with a metal shed that cost me loads and was so bad that I threw it away before finished building it. Far better off looking for sectionals and modifying to your size/shape. Really enjoying watching your build, I just wish i had the access and space o do the same.

Yeah I think I'm going to build my own garage out of wood, I only want something to keep the rain off so doesn't need to be amazing. If I build it myself, I can easily extend it or modify it in the future. Hopefully it'll take shape over the next week or two. Also found an e type jaguar

I built my own wooden garage, you can see the framing here And then plaster boarded etc inside, electrics and so on. I was lucky to get the framing for free, as my father in law (builder) does alot for a timber housing company. This worked out the cheapest method anyway, compared to building with facing breeze blocks or a sectional garage in a custom size.

Nice. My garages going to be about 2.5 meters by 5 meters, I wanted a bigger one, but I want the outdoor space to work on my cars. I've built the base now, not perfect but will do the job, I'll take the slabs back up tomorrow and sand and cement them in nice and level. Once that's done, I've hopefully got somone to come and cut the tree down a bit, then I can get on with building the garage.

Taking the time to make sure it's really level will save you a lot of work when putting the garage on top. Is the garage going to be mainly for storage then? You mention working outside? I'd much rather be working inside given the choice, don't enjoy cold wet winters one bit

I'd much rather be working inside given the choice, don't enjoy cold wet winters one bit Yeah the garage is for storage and to put a car inside that I'm not using at the moment, so it wil just be out of the way in the dry. I'm keeping the space around it open to park two cars and I'll be able to work on them in the summer, I'll have a car port over the whole area so will be dry, so I could work on it in the winter too if I really wanted. I've got some edging stones in place along the gates to seperate the lane and my space so the gravel Shouldn't spill out. I'd be interested to know weather just using crushed concrete gravel would be ok, or should I cover it with a different gravel too? I'll be able to finish off the bottoms of the gates too soon.

Re gravel, just remember if it's a possible work area that you're going to be kneeling on it and trying to roll the likes of trolley jacks etc so the smoother the better for the finished surface

Built up some basic frames, will try get it built into the garage frame with roof beams and things this week then I'll start getting the osb onto it. Not going too bad.

So for someone with not much of an idea on how to build a garage, what's the best products to use and most things bought on a cost basis, I've actually got a building now, I built the frame work then, I wrapped the whole thing in a damp proof membrane, don't know if that was a good idea or not, I figured it will stop the wind blowing through and give it extra waterproofing. I then cladded the inside and floor with OSB board, left space for a small window for a bit of natural light, an opening for a side door, and built a garage door frame, that's not too big so I can make a smaller door, which will be lighter and easier to use, I'm going to add the roofing felt and some guttering in the back, I've given the building a 10cm slope front to back to let the rain run off then just need to build the doors then, Whole lot will be clad with these www.edecks.co.uk/products/5011/42/236/0/Waney-Edge-Boards-(1829mm)Hopefully it will look a bit like a rustic shed. I've got new lights, sockets, fuse board and armoured cable to put in, I'll probably add a cctv system up there too to keep an eye on it all. The view from the house It may not be perfect but it will do the job I need it for and will be miles better than what I had originally, and now has opened up all the wasted space in the garden, so I can have my cars round the back and work on them without being on the front drive it bits.

A breathable roof membrane is much better for weatherproofing the outside, put battens to maintain an air gap either side so it can breathe. The DPM you've used will trap moisture in and the building will sweat. I did something similar in the past, hence the heads up
|

As above - get rid of that DPM now - otherwise it will rot out by this time next year. The membrane has to be breathable. Costs about £60 a roll. You must have air-flow or you are doomed before you start.

Both - if you need any advice, just PM me.
Staple the breathable membrane all over roof & sides then fit horizontal 25mm thick battens all around so the whatever cladding you will be using, sits 1" away from the membrane. This will allow the structure to breath, not sweat.

Yep, that'll do. Staple that all over, then fit some battens. If you are fitting a flat roof, you will need some timber firrings. I sell them all day every day but am no-where near you so you will have to find a local supplier. 47>0mm will be enough for you.

Been a while. I've built it now, and tidied up the area to the side, just need to build a car port off the side add some guttering and gravel it all. Not a perfect build as I'm just having ago at it to keep costs down, but it's good enough for what I need and I'm quite happy with the end result.
