Thought I'd start a thread as everyone loves a garage build thread. When my girlfriend wanted to buy a house. Space to build a garage or a garage that was there were my only requirements. We found a place with a garage but it's leaky and not what I want. It's an old sectional with asbestos roof. I've had a quote of £700 to remove it so will be getting them in to take it away ASAP. The original garage is set back to the neighbours and on a stupid angle. Plan is the build up the floor level to the right of the garage to get it level with the current base and have a 16x10 concrete sectional fitted in line with next doors, opening up the space to the next of the garage. The side has a decent amount of space but the funny angle means you cant get a car in unless it's fiesta sized which is no good. The side of the garage will be for working on cars. In the lane my garage is set back compared to others, I'll leave mine set back but I'm going to square off my fence in line with my neighbours, to give me a bit of extra space on the front of the garage. Possibly squeeze a car in if needed. My terrible drawing of my plans. I can get a sectional garage built and delivered for about £2500, then hopefully no more than £1000-£1200 to remove the old garage and build up the base and new fencing etc. I have power cable, lights, fuse board etc from when my company went bust and I raised the stores. Hopefully get it finnished before the end of September as I won't want to work out in the cold too much. Cheers Paul.

You could take the asbestos sheets down to the local council tip for free usually.

Yeah some tips accept it but still needs to be double or triple wrapped in polythene It looks like a nice useable space and at least the alleyway is clear! I had to clear tonnes of curse word from the alley behind my garage

If you've got to extend the base, concrete the asbestos in the foundations. It's about as safe a solution as you could find. It's never going to get disturbed afterwards is it?

If it can be fixed with a hammer, then it must be an electrical fault

Cheers the local council will take it in small ammoubts per house according to their site. But can always take some to me sisters houses etc.
I have thought just about putting under the concrete base,
I've now asked the people who I've chosen the garage from to come out and do a site inspection of what I've got already base wise, because it's pretty cracked up and might be better in the long Run to remove it and start again, just depends on cost as I don't want to spend thousands on a little garage, this will speed up the whole thing as doing things on my own when I have time will probably take a lot longer than I want.
I'm hoping to have a decent amount of space to store a few cars,

Looks awesome, looks almost like the neighbours have encroached over their boundaries and built their garages into the lane.
You should definitely remove the asbestos yourself and safe yourself £1k!! Hell I'll help if you get the beers in..

Looking at the pictures I would say the reason for the garage being set back and at an angle was to allow easy entry and exit off the lane without doing a 20 point shunt to get lined up, probably not so much of an issue if you have a wider garage and a shortish car with power steering but for the existing width garage it would have saved a lot of messing about especially with a van or estate car and would be preferable in the winter dark evenings when it has got muddy.. Or thinking again is it so you could drive past the garage door then reverse back in on full lock to be able to drive out forwards in the morning?
That tree at the back is very close as well, if you have to go through planning expect problems.

Been a few months. Various problems, father passed away, had a couple of different jobs althought starting with the NHS this month as an electrician so hopefully steady income I'll be able to get started properly. So far I've cleared out the side, and even gained about 2 foot by 6 foot extra space in the far left corner where the feather boards are instead of a fence. Now it's start the proper work once I've got a couple extra quid in my pocket.

£700??? It's cheap enough but it's only a days work for 3-4 of you. Make a huge fry up in the morning, choclate bars plenty of tea going, fresh crate of cold beer and a BBQ afterwards. That should see that down easily enough. Time to call in your favours! I'd recommend keeping that garage and putting it to the end if the garden as a shed. You can easily extend it at the sides hide the whole thing in cladding and put whatever roof you want ontop. You won't be able to buy a shed as good as that garage. Plus your new garage will quickly get filled up with junk!

As others have said, do yourself a favour and remove the asbestos yourself. I did when I removed my garage. Wore a suitable mask and disposable suit, hosed down the panels down to prevent dust, cut through metal retaining hooks with my grinder, then carefully removed and double wrapped in the right grade sheeting. Cost about £40 in all.
My rubbish dump sounds less of a PITA than yours though, as I was able to dispose of the load in one go.

Just a thought... You could extend the roof of your new garage over the space on the side to give you a car port? If the garage constructors tell you they can't do it.... They're lying! Can't be bothered more like. Modifying stuff it's what we lot do!

The side will defiantly have some sort of car port. There will b two cars down the side and one in n the garage.
Looking forward to getting it done. Probably won't get started until new year though due to funds and with the storage of one of my cars running out soon will need to get built by the middle of next year.

Built a gate out of some bits a pieces I had in the garage, and got a car onto the side where I had cleared the space, I'll move the car when I get building, but for now might as well use the room.

I love a garage build too.
And when it comes to seeing alternate options, Ashley is your guy.
I agree with rebuilding the sectional garage in any configuration you need.
Some 2x4's and 12mm ply topped with roofing felt, easy on site shed or extension to the garage.

My builder man is coming to have a look.
He's saying a wooden garage will be easier and cheaper to build, going to get some ideas off him and hopefully get it started the start of next year.
I'm going to get a two post lift fitted down the side too. Have a proper little workshop for myself.
