I had a 2002 Ibiza Tdi Sport 130 about 8 years ago, so same engine but I don't think the handling was quite up there with the Skoda, nor the trim quality.
They used to recon that the pump dusse 130 engines put out more like 145bhp from the factory but were rated at 130hp so as not to take sales from more sporting models in the range. Mine didn't feel much slower than the 2005 Ibiza Tdi 160 Cupra I bought later.
If the VRS has the same gear ratios as the 6-speed Tdi 130 Ibiza then 80mph equates to 2,000RPM. I think I was averaging about 46 genuine MPG (and I don't hang around!).
I always liked the VRS but could never afford one at the time as they have always had a cult following. They are handily 5-doors too.
Can't comment on the price as I've not been keeping an eye on the market for them of late.

This one definately chips about and I have a lead foot problem but the trip computer says I am doing high 40's so well chuffed, pricings all over the place but uber clean low milers seem to be in the £3.5-4k bracket and chav raped examples are high hundreds. I get a feeling they wont get any cheaper then this unless really rough

It's a modern, mainstream 130 PD VAG car, it was made to be a daily and is in it's prime with regard to being cheap to maintain. Anything breaks, there's a spare in your local scrappers.
I'm no fan of diesels but if i needed a cheap high mileage beater that'd still have a bit of a blast in it, then it'd be one of the cars i'd look at.
It's twin is the VW Polo 9n GT. They were always thin on the ground by comparison. There was a 130bhp 9n3 Polo which again was the same car, just with Tesco Value looks and badging. They may be more common - who knows, they just look the same as any other late '00s Polo..
