Hello all afraid its not retro but a potential daily, I am thinking of buying a mk1 Fabia Vrs as a daily as my 97 Impreza is starting to get a bit painful to fuel as a daily(to and from work and school) each day, now my question to everyone is I have seen a car with 95k miles but no service history habe taken it for a test drive and all seems well. Told the chap that I am abit weary of the unknown history and he has offered the car with a fresh service and a new timing belt for the asking price if I was up for buying. Is this a risk worth taking?? He wants £2700 for it I understand the belt change is in the £300 area. Thoughts please!
cheers
Matt

Yeah they seem to hold the money, guessing thats because they are pretty good! A good bit of poke easy spares and cheap to run. This is all gathered from the web so blow me out the water if you need to!

I'd be looking at a leon Cupra tdi.
Much cheaper, faster, handle better. More spec and no want white interior.
Or an ibiza xupra TDI if you can find one. Same as the skoda but with more power and Ap 4 pot breaks

Unless that's in absolutely showroom fresh condition, it's about £1,000 overpriced I'm afraid...

Unless that's in absolutely showroom fresh condition, it's about £1,000 overpriced I'm afraid... They do seem to bounce between £1.4k to £4k, the ordinary tdi models are at the £1k to £1.7k mark. Desirability seems to keep the prices up. I'm wondering if higher documented miles is better as I understand the PD lumps can give a lot of miles if looked after properly. thanks for your comments people.

id do it if i needed something that isnt slow but still does silly mpg, and i hadnt bought something french a friend has one on an 06, Red, hid, big rear arb sprinter intercooler and a map, 190 bhp, 53 mog average being spanked about surveying woodlands so its on winter tyres most of the year. needs good pads or a bigger vw group disc he says ! rear arb makes a big difference, also just get standard dampers, good enough and most likely tired at ten years old

I run a leon 05 tdi cupra as my Dailey. Payyed £2800 for it 2 years ago with 92k on the clock. 1 owner full history car Done 40k trouble free miles. It eats tires and breaks though. As above I did a big brake swap using Tt parts, it's mupped to just under 200 bhp on a clutch saver map. My better half bumped it last year resulting in it being a cat d, cost me 500 to buy it back and 60£ to fix so Basicly free motoring.

I had a 53 plate Fabia vRS in 2009 - I think I paid £4,700 for it and it was pretty much the cheapest one around. It had 96k, but was a company car so it had a full printout of history. It was a brilliant little car - fast and punchy, reasonably comfy, >50mpg no matter how I drove it. I put about 20k miles on it in a year, but swapped it for a Superb when my little one arrived because you couldn't get a rear facing child seat in the back and me and my wife in the front! In terms of fastish small cars that are cheap to run I would definitely recommend it, but I've not been paying attention to prices, so while it seems a little expensive, I'm not sure how it stacks up against the competition from that perspective... Cheers Duncan

IMHO don't worry about the mileage. If it is a daily you'll soon break things and/or lose money as it gets ever closer to the 100,000 mile mark, if not go beyond it.
As an example I bought a 944 S2 on a "low" 128k. It did take quite a bit of work to get the car right and TBH it still will need it with the new owner. The Turbo that followed it with 171k (I sold it with 180k on the clock) was near perfect as a daily. It had new bushes, subframe mounts, suspension etc. and to this day I regret selling it.
The Escort was super low mileage but boy as my thread will say that was a world of pain!
When I bought my M3 I decided that with it being a daily, mileage would not be an issue on the car, if anything 100k+ would make life easier. The car I bought was in better condition than all of the cars I saw yet it is on the most miles at 122k (now on 123k in 3 weeks!), but it has ALOT of history including some things that did not make the receipts (genuine new dampers on the rear in 2011).
With that in mind I wouldn't rule out a Leon TDI in your budget but it will have to be the right car;).

Cheers for the response people, I'm thinking of binning this one off and keep searching and concentrate on condition/history more than the mileage, and if I see a Leon(mk4 golf) I might go for one of them.

We've had a mk5 gt tdi in daily duties for the past 4 years and has never missed a beat. Quick enough when needed and always returns 45-55 mpg.
Oh and it's for sale £3250

The seat Ibiza sport TDI 130 is fundamentally the same car underneath but are about half the price, and the fr TDI is just the newer version of the sport. Both are cheaper than a vrs.

How does the condition of the new one compared to the other one you saw? It looks good in the photo.
Nicely done.

This one has a couple of light scratches(after a wash the front has loads of little stonechips but no rot) that can polish out and drives like new as far as I am concerned, the other one was showing corrosion under the paint at the end of the sills and had a lot of dinks and scratches a smashed spot light and a slight pull to the left when braking. So I was surprised at the condition of this to be fair. Lots of dogs about after looking at a few but I hope this ones a win. Drove it with enthusiasm from oxford to northampton and the fuel needle didnt budge, my scooby on the other hand did northampton to milton keynes to bedford then home and that was half a tank
