Very cool, my second road car was one of these (after my A series mini fell apart)
It was a 4 door XL but with the same 1.3 engine.
That car took me from Ireland to Dubrovnik and back via France, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia, Slovenia, Italy and Switzerland. It did 8000 miles in 4 weeks and the only trouble I had was a flat in Krakow and an overheating issue heading up the San Bernadino Pass.
It then managed to bring me and all my stuff from Ireland to Poznan a couple of months later as well as living outside throughout a Polish Winter (with water - not coolant in the block) and still survived.
I think it's still alive out in Poland somewhere.
I still have the Starlet with the same 12 valve and that has taken some beating.
Fantastic choice for a first car.

Rare to see one of those on the roads now. How's the inner arches and rear shock towers for rust? The ae92's are notorious for rust.

Great cars, reliable and fine, I've got a GTi-16.
As the man above says, look for rust, anywhere near the rear wheels; inner arches, turrets, rear kidneys (behind bumper corners) seatbelt mounts. Literally everywhere!
Luckily (for you) the non-gti's seem to last better as they don't have the bodykit..

Time for an update...almost a year later. After buying the car I didn't really do much until I passed my test in October, by this point I'd kind of forgotten about this. Since then I have done a few things just to make it a bit more unique. First of all the passenger sun visor wasnt really functional so I decided to make my own out of a genuine Japanese plate, it works well enough.   For Christmas I was gifted with some side wind deflectors that are made by Heko after some slight trimming they fit nice and snug.  The classic tape deck wasn't really doing it for me so I decided to upgrade however didn't want one with all these different coloured leds etc but I found this one in Halfords which simply has white leds, DAB, Bluetooth, AUX and USB.(featuring the little Joe air freshener.)  My brother had these Mini alloys laying around and since they were the same PCD I thought I'd give them a whirl, turns out they look pretty good.    Finally after some searching I found this OEM cup holder in the same colour as my interior and got it for a steal as well.   |

Alright update time (not as long in between this time!) first off it looks a lot different but we'll get to that shortly. The next thing on the list of things to do was lower it, this took a lot longer than expected... well half of it did. Got the front lowered nice and easy and then ran into problems with bolts at the back...  And then whilst like this due to Toyota routing the brake lines relatively close to the drive shaft to begin with I think you can tell what happened next...yep bye bye brake lines  Now conveniently or not so much I have a HiQ basically at the end of my road so decided to take it to them to fix as it was the safest option, they did fix it and told me they raised the coilover so it would be fine... one week later, what happens?? That's right another leak in my brake line because there was still contact. I have now taken it to a different garage who rerouted them for me and so no more issues, also after that fiasco I got the rear sorted but the Mini wheels no longer clear the strut so back to cool retro hubcaps it was for the time being.  Another quick little mod was the purchase of some pink LED sidelights because why not eh.  Not too long after all this something popped up on eBay that I just couldn't resist so after a quick chat on payday I went for a drive picked up these and fitted them the day after because I was so full of excitement.    This then put me in a swing of getting things done, I moved the train handle from the window to the bumper as it should be. Also resprayed the tow hooks black to clean it up a bit.  Found a friend in between...  Sorted out the external oil cooler (something bosozoku style that I've always been a fan of)  Its zip tied in the picture but its now bolted in place** And then purely out of luck my brother put a VR6 lip on his mk3 golf estate project so I inherited the old one which with a bit of trimming and cable ties fitted quite nicely.  I plan on eventually extending it at the back of the bumper with fiberglass so it fits flush but for now it does just fine. I am now content with the car but that certainly doesn't mean nothing else will happen to it, I go away to South Africa later this month but the moment i'm back ill be looking for more stuff to do to it. |
