Morning all, Currently on the Worlds dullest Conference Call so have a few minutes to ask a question. So looking to triangulate the rear part of the chassis on Woody to increase rigidity and torsional strength I am not taking the cab off so would appreciate feedback on my rough mock up. Ignore the white lines, they are tape and after uploading the picture realised that they would do nothing! So it is the red lines I am asking about.  Would this work? If so what size square tubing should I use. Any and all feedback appreciated. Regards, P.  |

I wouldn't. Open channel section chassis are normally designed to have some flexibility so if you make too rigid it might crack somewhere else. This is why rivets rather than welds are used. Traditionally people just boxed in the side of the rails to increase strength but unless you have a monster engine that produced a lot of twisting torque leave as standard.

As said before, boxing the chassis is the usual step to a stronger chassis. Triangulation will mainly stop front rear movement of the rails relative to each other. A similar result can be gained with gussets in the corners. Just be careful as modifying your chassis can take you into biva territory.

I wouldn't bother either. What you're suggesting wouldn't do anything of any great benefit- boxing would be more use.
Oh and you can now legally box a chassis and it not require BIVA. You can also add additional cross members within the perimeter, just not cut any out.

As mentioned above, this wouldn't reduce twisting very much as the additional bars are not in the twist plane.

Waste of material to no effect, for the reasons stated above.
If you don't believe weld two bits of metal together in a 'X' clamp two legs to the bench and holding the other two try and twist them and see how little resistance there is.
