as per title really, ive got a very poorly engine, lack of any compression, i think valves are shot.Given that the factory 803cc engine has as much punch as a nice walk out in the park on a sunday morning with the dogs, I'm thinking along the lines of something different as a power plant. i want to stay sensible, no cutting bulkheads to graft a 7.2v8 into it, but what ideas are out there? Ive considerd an a series moggy setup, but gearbox looks as tho itl pose some serious problems(much to long), ive heard a herald 1200 engine was used in the later models, but will that mate up with my gearbox, or will a herald engine box fit with minimal mods (expecting props to be jigged etc)
any advise from people would be nice.
thanks in advance.

What about one of the little Suzuki/ Honda lumps out of a Cappachino or Honda beat? Think they were 3cyl turbocharged?

It depends on how much wiring he wants to do. The engine is not a bad shout however. Surely someone must know what can fit and can't into these .

don't really like the modern route, id rather stick to something with a carb and basic wiring

Fair enough. Why not rebuild your existing engine then? If you are going to replace it with an oldschool kind of engine, chances are that would benefit from a rebuild too....

cost and availabilty of parts are my main issues, a useable herald lump 2nd hand would come in cheaper than the $55 plus vat i got quoted (granted id never pay but still) just for a headgasket set from a well known motorfactors.

Sure the dolomite lump is the one you want, iirc we sold one to a guy who put it in his standard daily driver. Herald might well be right too.

was it just an engine you sold or a gearbox aswell? gearstick location is an odd one in a standard, ive never had the misfotune to be wedged in a herald!

I seem to remember the herald ohv engine was a development of the standard engines and is pretty much a straight swap, might even apply to the 1500 engine used in dolomites and the midget.

I believe the 1300 is almost as powerful as the 1500 but more reliable (doesn't have the crank thrust washer wear problems)

AFAIK the Triumph 803, 948, 1147, 1296 and 1493 engines are all the same basic block and pretty much interchangeable.
Depends what you want really - the 1147 as found in the Herald 1200 (39 bhp), and 12/50 (48 bhp) plus Mk1 & 2 Spitfire (62 bhp) is a pretty sweet running and hardy unit and will likely fit you gearbox and shouldn't break it either.
You could also move on to a 1296 as used in the the Herald 13/60 (60 bhp) or Spitfire mk 3 & 4 but you'd probably do well to use the matching gearbox. The Mk4 Spit box would also give you synchro on first, but you'd need to change the propshaft flange to match it's larger output flange. The 1300 is very tunable and 80 - 90 bhp is possible without going too extreme.
All of the above a free-revving and will survive on the original gearing. If you go to a 1500 you'll find you have to do something about the gearing as they are much less keen to rev. The 1500 gearbox is also longer though it's not to hard to get one mated to a 1300 box.

The Standard 8 engine (803cc) is the same basic block as the 10 and early Herald (948cc), Herald 1200, 1300 Toledo 1300 and Dolomite 1500.
The engine front plates are different on the Herald, Toledo and Dolomite engines and would need swapping for the Standard's front plate, or you can use Viva HA engine mounts and the Herald front plate. The best advice around Engines is the small crank 1300 off an early 1300 Herald or Spitfire. The big crank 1300 and the 1500's don't like to rev. Check the engine codes on the 1300 if you go that route.
You can fit Herald gearing in the Standard box (all alloy) and an early Herald diff (GA code from memory) 4.11:1 ratio. If you don't want to go the pudding stirrer route, you can use a Herald remote if you cut the floor, but you might have to move the handbrake back. Or you might be lucky and find a Standard Pennant box and remote change.
Have a look on the Standard Owners forum. Whilst it's generally inactive to the point if near death, there are some good threads on there with the details you need.
Damn...typing too slow.
