My Vitara has manual locking hubs on the front of the car, from what I can see on American ebay these come with paper type gaskets. Would there be any reason not to use a rubber based material as opposed to the normal paper? I would think rubber is more durable...and as I go wading sometimes it would be useful to that a durable gasket for when I rebuild the hubs instead of having to cut out a new gasket each time, or should I just use some sealant?

I wonder if rubber might be too thick and stop the hubs sitting solidly where they bolt onto. Would a good quality instant gasket be better if the joint faces are flat and accurately machined like Wellseal or something like the sump sealant Vauxhall use. I can't think what that is at the moment.

What about coating the paper gaskets with grease so they will release ok? RTV sealer might be difficult to get apart in future?
