Today I was off work and the sun was out, so I pulled my small collection of push bikes out of the shed. This is our 'pub bike', which Mrs generallee and I wobble around on on sunny summer days. It's a 1930 something Holdsworth tandem, I had a local bike shop fit a Sturmey-Archer 5 speed with hub brake, which cost more than some of my cars. Put together. It has a front hub brake too, which isn't connected but is a sort of retarder for long downhill runs, so the rim brake doesn't heat up and pop the tyre. One day we might strip it, get it painted and re-chrome the shiny bits. It needed mudguards, (sometimes there are puddles between our house and the ale house, although we don't ride in the rain). Which brings me onto the next bit....

The next bike on the pile was my old BMX, I have no idea what frame it is (I was once told it was a GT but I don't think it is), I built it from second hand parts in the late 90s when I was a teenager but bent the forks. I was going to cobble it together with some eBay forks, but I don't have any time and little inclination. It has old but hardly used, off-brand 48 spoke wheels, plus other stuff which might be useful, like a gyro and old-school lay back seat post. If someone offered me a tenner (or beer) they can have it. Can deliver in Manchester for beer. You can see in the pictures how bad the forks are, and the chrome could do with some polish...

Which meant I could get to my old 10 speed. I took the mudguards off it to fit to the tandem (but they don't fit very well, so they are back in the shed). It was probably an expensive bike back in the day, although I'm not sure what the frame is. It was bought by one of my dad's neighbours years ago from a police sale in Moss Side, complete with attractive machine-paint finish. Unfortunately it has a crack in the frame, which I tried to photograph. It's at the end of the spanner... If anyone wants it they can have it, it may yield some useful parts. The chain rings are a work of art, but pretty worn. If no one wants it I'll put them on the wall. Would be a shame to scrap it, the handle bars and stem are ali and very light. I have found the seat post and saddle since I took the pictures...

More pictures of the racer... The crank and pedal on the other side have been replaced. The teeth are a bit worn, but they don't jump or throw the chain off. You can make out the crack here... I'm a bit embarrassed by how grubby it is. I finished building this up. I know a hybrid with mudguards and luggage rack isn't cool, but neither is getting to where you are going covered in mud with a sweaty back from a back pack. It's a daily scoot, I want it reliable and comfortable, but the gearing is ridiculously low after the racer. It's a late 90s Raleigh frame (reynolds tubes), the rest has been replaced over the years I have had it. It needs a bell and lights (even more uncool) and it's done.

Looks like the crack is just on the stamped dropout, easy to get those and braze another one in.Might be quite a good 60's or 70's touring frame,it's got quite fancy lugs. I like old bikes,i have an 80's Atala Italian racer in team colours with a load of Campagnolo gear on it and a Reynolds 531 Carrera. Both live in the spare bedroom and haven't been ridden since i restored them !

Cheers, yeah it's a nice thing, don't think it's ever been ridden much. The frame paint is original which is unusual on a 40 year old Italian bike ! Bit of a mix of Campy stuff on it,but the front and rear hubs are C Record attached to Omega Strada rims, worth a fair old wedge alone. The rest is mostly Athena i think. Anyway have a pic and good luck with your sale !
