This is a little build thread about 'BIG WIGS'..
Mk2 1.3 type 19 Golf more door.
Me and (more so) my girlfriend have always fancied a red mk2 Golf.. and when a close friend went and bought big wigs off another lad I was mates with we were very jealous that we missed out but at the time didn't have the money. A few years passed and unfortunately my friend didn't get the chance to ever sort it out so it just sat on his drive, the time came for his test and he passed! Woo! .... and then bought a brand new mk7 Golf.
So straight away I was up to his house after he told me he was selling it, and a deal was done, me and my girlfriend finally had one (let's hope when she passes her test she will actually like driving it!!)
So there's a little story about how we got hold of it. It's a relatively low mileage car with little owners and original brown dash/tweed interior and a (far too slow for me) 1.3 engine which will hopefully be ideal for the lady when she comes to drive it.
Just after we got it;
The car came with a bit of rust but new wings and new rear arch repair, so I cracked on with the arch repair (p/s) and later found that the other side which I thought was in good nick was shocking, the arch and sill was bunged full of filler so a VW Heritage order was in... order.
More pics before work was carried out;
Bit of blowtorch and bumper shine treatment;
Rust repairs and wing painting;
The bottom of the doors, rear arches and sills all sit in red oxide for now until we can afford a respray but it looks tidy enough! I did very little prep on the arches as I'll leave that to someone who's good at it!
I painted the wings with spray cans which with a flat and a polish will look pretty good to be fair!
We also went about retrimming the door cards which came out okay but the material is definately not ideal and has starting to pull away in places but for a first attempt ever it's pretty good!
Anyway, the norm of the carb being an absolute gob sh*te was a little task for me to take on, turned out the carb was okay but the feed for the carb had a fuse blown and the auto choke was playing up too. That sorted I went on to see why there was no circulation in the water system, new thermostat, rad fan switch and a fuse later and that was that sorted. The temp gauge wire was unplugged too! Someone had been tinkering with this in the past and cocked up in many ways! While I was at it I got rid of the awful silver paint on the rad shroud and cam cover.
I had a rear brake pipe burst on me pulling out the garage the other day so that had to be sorted too..
Finally made a 2" exhaust system for it this week with just one powerflow resinator at the rear, sounds pretty sweet but would like to experiment with a Helmholtz resonator to reduce drone.
How she sits at the minute in the sun and rain hiding its faded paint and primered bits!! But it's totally solid now which I'm happy with.
Hoping to MOT this week after I've gone over the brakes one more time
Enjoy (I'm sorry but people were asking for a thread) the pic heaviness!!!
