pistonpopper , whilst working his way through 12 cars had near the end, an S Type Jaaaag.
This, without me knowing, moved some grey matter within my head and I am now considering buying one for occasional use by me which will eventually turn into the Wifes daily when her Accord finally passes away. The model in question is a 2.7l Twin Turbo Diesel - 06 with 75k - PP loved his - reliability seems good - anyone had one?

Great car. Whilst they do seem quite reliable, they're ruinous if anything does go wrong.
We've had a few in stock over the years and paid something like £2k on each one for various bits before and after delivery. Don't let me put you off, but just bear that in mind. I drove a couple of them daily for what was probably a few weeks in total and liked them both. Try and get an XS.

Take a look at this thread... retrorides.proboards.com/thread/183770/jaguar-forums-type-jagsI recently sold mine because it was costing me too much to maintain. Yeah there's loads being broken for spares, but the spares aren't cheap and an electrical problem can sometimes wipe out 2 or 3 other parts, the climate control water valve being a good example. I had a diesel, it did 25mpg average which wasn't amazing imo, but I don't know whether there was something wrong with it. It always had a light on the dash lol. There's no particular model to go for, one has wood, one doesn't, that's the main difference lol. Personally I don't like the bodykit on the XS. Get as late a one as you can, they made various revisions to them over the years, post 2002 and post 2005 were big revisions. If you're going diesel, try to avoid one with a DPF (straight exhaust tailpipes). Old boys who only go to the paper shop or the bookies in them don't do enough miles to clear out the DPF and it can cause issues. Biggest areas to watch out are, sills, arches, air con/heater, wheel bearings, brake servos, ABS sensor faults, throttle bodies on petrol cars, turbos and EGRs on diesels... I think that's the main culprits. EDIT: and also, they can eat suspension bushes which in turn, destroys the tyres quickly. Check for un-even tyre wear.

Great advice thank you. This is a link to the exact car in question www.mainlinemotorco.co.uk/used-cars/jaguar-s-type-2-7-d-v6-se-4dr-farnborough-201602261413672

Yeah, that's a DPF one. I wouldn't say "never get one". They say that if you give them a half our run on the motorway once a week, that will extend their life, that's where they fall down with previous owners. This one is pre DPF, has exhausts like a single decker bus lol

MOST helpful - on delving deeper I have found a non DPF model, a year older with lower mileage and it is closer and cheaper too!

Actually now that you mention it, on one of the cars I was referring to above the DPF was one of the issues. Cost us a fortune! I still think the XS is far nicer. Love that mesh grille.

I wouldn't worry too much about the DPF. I;d look into delete kits even with the implications but ensure that a silencer or 'dummy' DPF replaces it. As with most things Jaguar, reliability improves with the later revised cars including the XJ40, XJS, XK8 especially (the engine that is).
Rot however would worry me and that is something even the newer Jags (well, pre X330 cars) do not seem immune to.

That I am aware of but I'd still consider that. Christ, I was considering it on a couple of diesels I was considering buying as a daily .

Hi, I've just signed up and not had chance to say hi yet. I was reading this and thought I should mention that the fuel economy gains from owning a diesel jag are not enough when you know what problems these engines can have. When you look at the cost of injectors and high pressure fuel pumps, turbo's and DPF issues you can get aswell as EGR valves needing replacement around every 4 years. The 2.7 is the same engine as the disco 3 and Range Rover sport and I don't have enough fingers or toes to count how many engines I've changed. I would recommend a petrol if you do really want an S type but beware I've just changed a lower front arm on a 2007 s type and it was £430 retail only available from the dealer

After much deliberation, and with lots of great help on here, I've decided to avoid buying one so my search will continue. Now going to consider a 5 series, W210, W202 & ML Mercs or even a Lexus or something! So much to choose from!!

I've been looking for another big old auto barge Mate, looked at s types,s class mercs etc, then by chance a mate in the trade called me about a Vauxhall omega ,now I've never been a Vauxhall man but with the other two Mercedes already I thought why not? I've bought it blind picking it up this weekend, full history lowish miles and very very cheap with long mot,,could be fun!

A mate of mine bought a V8 5 series at the same time as I got my Jag, whilst it wasn't as well spec'd, it had much better build quality and bullet-proof reliability!

I must admit I've had a Lexus LS400 on my Radar for ages, I've noticed just lately that the prices have started to climb.

Let us know when you have your eye on something more specific so we can let you know what to look out for Well, after much chatting with SWMBO, we've pretty much decided upon a Lexus RX300 from around 2005. I've seen a couple with 70-90k for about 5k but so far, the cheapest insurance I can find is over £600!!! I may look into Wifey insuring it as a second car with her full NCB on her daily being taken into consideration.

OH has a '02 RX300 (3l V6) on LPG as her daily, done 180k+ now but doesn't really show it internally, its exceptionally comfortable. Things to look out for: VSC and check engine lights - these seem to come on randomly but luckily don't put it into limp home mode if they have one, simplest fix so far was to clean and check the seal on the fuel filler cap.....lights can be reset by disconnecting the battery or pulling the ECU fuse. Never got round to reading codes yet so don't know if you can use a cheap scanner or not. Rot! Not sure if this is applicable to the later ones but look out for rot underneath, especially at the rear round the fuel tank, spare wheel well and rear beam, I didn't and hers was hanging, have spent may hours fetching rust off, welding and rust proofing. Check for rot creeping out from the plastic mouldings between the rear arches and the door mouldings and also that the water drains in the lower rear quarters aren't blocked. Rear tracking needs to be spot on or the handling is compromised badly, if its out the adjusters will be siezed and need to be cut off/ out, the rear axle and suspension has bushes everywhere, bushes aren't available so you will need to replace the complete assemblies - these are mega money from Lexus (£180 for a rear track control arm and i needed 2 + another £70 for the adjusters), there is one place that makes pattern parts but you may need to import them yourself Front lower wishbones have bushes that wear/ break up too, pattern wishbones are available and a quick change - you don't even need to drop the bottom ball joint is just unbolts from the arm. Cambelts have a big service mileage and are simple if time consuming to change, IMO a V6 Omega is much more difficult, change the water pump at the same time, you may have to do a slight modification with a dremel to one of the guards to get the pump in and out without too much swearing Autogear box - on the forums everybody seems to recommend using the genuine oil to prevent bad things happening, its not cheap unless you get it from the states! From internet reading people do seem to report hassles with using other oils even those to supposedly the same spec. You can only change about half of it at a time. I've done ours for peace of mind as I didn't know when it was last done, buying the oil from the states and paying shipping and duty it was still cheaper... Towbars are hard to get, the official Lexus tow pack comes with a transmission cooler - there were some issues when towsure made their own bars so they stopped doing them. We had to import one from Poland, there is a transmission overheat warning light fitted as standard but its never illuminated when we've been towing the caravan and its been up some pretty big hills. Its got a big gross train weight so if you are towing commercially you may need a tacho. Standard factory sound system is good but has no aux in and its intergrated so you wouldn't want to change it. Despite having the buttons and the screen SATNAV is not a factory fit - its a paid option, not sure if new updated map discs are available. Insurance isn't cheap but neither are replacement genuine parts. We get between 18 and 25mpg doing stop start or on a run and about 19mpg towing, as I said its on gas so it doesn't really matter, 70l tank fits in the spare wheel well IMO they are way way nicer to drive than the Merc ML she was fancying prior to this. Powerwise they are OK, if you boot it ours will go reasonably well(for a 2 ton 4wd anyway), when towing I found it was easier to drive as a semi manual and make it use kickdown otherwise it would try to hang onto a gear too long and loose speed on hills. Haven't driven the obvious rival of a similar age range rover recently enough to make a direct comparison, however, personally I would say the '03 plate (3l V6 auto) Ford Maverick that our Lexus replaced was just as comfortable to drive, more powerful, a better towcar and did more MPG, however it was noisier on the motorway and had a much lower GTW which was important for us. The Lexus will sit on a tarmac motorway on cruise control at 70 and other than tyre noise from the snow tyres its silent
