Does anyone else suffer with people that just don't "get" the retro/classic car scene?
I've been into retro's for years now but only just started buying a couple, I've got a couple of early 90's hot hatches which although not old enough to be retro for some they are from my era. Since buying them I've had some light hearted jokes from family, friends and neighbours about having a load of scrap parked on my drive.
My one neighbour took great joy in asking when they were coming to collect the skip but soon got defensive when I explained to him that it's worth more than his 05 plate focus.
Surprisingly my Mrs understands it but she did grow up with me in the early 00's max power "cruising" scene when the cars I'm into were in their prime, although i'd never stick a big fibreglass bodykit to any of my cars.
We have a fairly new daily driver but that's the family car. The toys are just for me.

Yes, I get this a lot at work.
2006 Saab has a private plate, and I keep it spotless. Worth £1500 yet I get "oh you're in the posh car today" or comments about being paid too much.
220 GTI is worth double that, yet constantly referred to as a "banger".
Austin 1300 they just refer to as " old cars ".
I cycle to work now. Much easier. £50 bike from the 1990s. But because cycling is the new " golf" they all assume I'm a middle aged guy, with a £3k carbon fibre thing and I'm balls deep in my secretary.

the worst comment i've ever had is my wifes boss. He asked me how my frontera was going (which was already in a sarcastic tone) i replied yeah good thanks. He replied "well youve got to start somewhere havent you"
this fella, as nice as he appears and gives the impression to be, is status driven to the core. big house, land, horses, discovery 4, defender, 2 skiing holidays a year, all the cliche's.
i just buy what i need not what i want, because i'm not a pompous fark and i don't like to advertise my "wealth"

That was the main reason I flogged my metro last month, it had one wing a different colour and a wheel trim missing so of course I got stick for it everyday. I'd bought it for £100 after selling my Jag to pay off a big bill. One of the guys I work with simply said "what even is it?" the first time I pulled up in it.
It's gone now and I've bought a more modern looking daily, it seems to be modern classics which suffer the worst. I don't get any stick when I drive my mini and that is the same age as the metro!

I get this alot, especially at work. There are very few cars older than 10 years old in my works car park and my 28 year Golf does stand out. A lot of people like it though some people try to take the pi$$... One person refers to it as a tonka toy, I refer to him as a _ _ _ _ _ One of my best mates loves his cars but doesn't 'get' the love I have for older stuff.

Oh don't get me wrong I don't care either. Just annoys me that people judge us by the cars we drive. "Oh it's an old car, must mean he's poor" kind of attitude. Atleast I own my cars and not tied down into a three year finance deal that I'll end up losing thousands over just to have a better car that you

Okay, let's go the opposite way. I drive this... It's 21 years old and in the UK it would be just another old Range Rover but here, ooh it's an "Imported European car!" so I must be rich, right? I wish. A cultural thing that I never realised until afterwards. Any European car would do, Merc, BM, etc., no matter what the state would get the same reaction. But if it was Japanese, of any stripe and ten years old, never mind 21+, it would just be an old car, and I'm poor. So people see what they want/are preconditioned to see. Nowt we can do, so let 'em get on with it. Why did I buy it? Because it's a toy and I like the '38, end of. The ability to park it anywhere I want was an unforeseen bonus!
