Another question from me... Looking at some new wheels for my bedford cf. I think ideally id want 255/60/15 tyres on the back and 205/60/14 tyres on the front. The van has a GVW of 2500, +25% รท4 = 687.5. Thats 95 rated as far as loading is concerned (cant find the front tyres at this rating so will need to change size a bit ) Anyhow, is that all I need to know or do I need comercial/van tyres?

if it isnt going to be loaded up too much then go for any decent tyre , as most big moddern cars weigh a fair bit now days so tyres are pretty strong

Ive been reading alot but am still a little unsure.
Ill deffinately go with the highest rating I can, I guess stiffest would be better.
But is the only mot/legal requirement the speed/load rating etc?
don't really want to spend ยฃ1500 on wheels and tyres only for the mot man to fail it because there not c marked van tyres.
I guess I can ask him when I see him but I wanted to get some tyres for my berlingo from my MOT place and he wanted to sell me van tyres untill he found out it had side windows. Bedford has side windows but its also about 15 times as heavy as the berlingo.

My workings out above, thats vehicle weight plus maximum load weight plus 20%.
I think unladed kerb weight is actually about 1500kg

Why are you adding 25%, the GVW is the max it can legally be. as for the tyres the MOT won't fail it on not being commercial tyre but as said before C&U means that if it was designed to use them you need commercial tyres legally and from an insurance standpoint.

Some tyre website said to add 25% when working out your required loading, so I did.
Pretty sure this will have been specified to use comercial tyres, so its ok for test but not in accordance to C&U.

Check the handbook if you have it.

I don't, been searching the net for ages and cant find any info on original tyre spec.
All I can find is in the haynes which says 195r 14.

Found a spec sheet that says 195 14c 6 ply radial so I guess thats it.
Legaly I do need comercial tyres even if normals with high enough rating would pass test and be safe.
Ill go see what sizes I can find in c marked then.

Just looked up C&U regs on tyres.
First thought, is my camper a goods vehicle even though its not for carrying goods, as it is based on a goods vehicle? I havent got v5 through yet.
Second thought, it makes no mention of having to fit the type of tyre the vehicle was designed for. It only says the tyre must be in good condition and of a load rating high enough for its gross weight.
Can anyone clarify?
I cant find any legal requirement anywhere that says I need to run comercial tyres.

I use Van tyres on my VW Splitty; at a guess I'd say the majority don't.

I found a few more too.
255/60/15 for the back arent get able in commercial though. cant find much comercial rated in 15 wider than 225.
I can find all the sizes I could wish for with a high enough load rating though. don't want to do that if its not legal though. I like being insured.
As I say though, I cant find any requirement other than load rating.
Can anyone point to any reference for the requirement for commercial rated tyres or need to stick to manufacturers specification?

Best bet would be to ask your insurer and get it in writing, I know the commercial tyre rule applies to 'proper' commercial trucks,C&U states something like they have to be of the construction and type designed for the vehicles use which as I read it if you are using it as a personal vehicle so only load ratings would apply.

Have you read that somewhere? Are there a different set of regulations for commercial vehicles? Ive been all through this... www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1986/1078/contents/madeIt even has reference to buses and I cant find a single mention of commercial rated tyres, number of ply, or of any need to have a construction as specified by the manufacturer. All I can find in this document is reference to load rating. I'm reasonably sure I don't care what my insurance company would say. If its not against the law then I don't see how they would have a leg to stand on unless its in my documents in black and white. don't get me wrong, I'm not calling you out or starting any arguments. I'm not even trying to fight for the right to use car tyres. But I will use car tyres if I'm legaly allowed to. If I'm not allowed ill use commercial tyres. I just need to make sure before I drop a load of wedge on rubber. If anyone can quote anything legal PLEASE do as I would like to be as sure as I can be.
