Hi, I'm not knocking your intentions, far from it. What I'm commenting on is different approaches to a solution, it depends which are easiest to replace bucket, screw or valve. I think your'e right, change the seats and get back to, as near as possible, square one.

The comment in the Haynes manual says "after the valve seats have been recut in the head the valve will naturally protrude further above the head. This protrusion should not exceed specification either, if you think of remedying this by grinding something off the end of the valve stem you could get into difficulties with valve clearances. It may be possible to fit valve seat inserts but the manufacturers do not recommend it".
So it doesn't specifically say (in that book at least) that there's a problem grinding the end off the valve stem. Not sure why it talks like that about inserts, but then it's an old book.
