Hi All, It’s been a while since I last had a Supra. I have recently sold my Volvo Amazon and a white, turbo, auto popped up on ebay with an hour left, at a price I could afford, just as the buyers were driving away with my Amazon. FATE! Here is an extract of the 4 years I had with my old supra; retrorides.proboards.com/thread/108799/toyota-supra-mkiii-restoration-attempt (sorry most of the photo’s don’t work, I used facebook to host most of them) I did try again in between and got it all wrong. I bought a blue one, it didn’t last long as what I really wanted was my old one back and so the search criteria had to be the same again, white, turbo, auto. So this is build two! My friend is picking it up for me on Tuesday and bringing it over to me the following Sunday. Apparently the aux cooling fans don’t work which is causing it to overheat, I can’t remember off the top of my head if they are just for aircon or if there is one each so I need to look at that. I need to do a compression and sniff test to make sure the HG hasn’t gone again, it has had ARP’s already, so changing it if it needs it won’t be too expensive. It has a little rust on one of the outer arches so I’ll get that sorted at the same time as I delete the spoiler and rear wiper. The interior is a little tatty but I might think of something funky to do with it... or leave it as it is. I’m going to put a set of rota grids on it, unless my old wheels turn up and I’ll be painting all the exterior trims dark grey again. Oh and of course some washers under the wastegate won’t go amiss either, along with some slammage I’ll get some piccies when it arrives. EXCITED!

I think that everybody just loves a turbo Supra! Absolutely ! I've always had a major soft spot for these. Sadly yet another car that used to be seen fairly frequently on the roads, I can't remember when I last saw one :/

My best friend just bought one too, in black hee hee. So I get to see one twice a week, lucky me. There is one I see occasionally locally but I don't know him. Apart from that they are getting few and far between! I love them though

The day has finally come where it has arrived! Well yesterday anyway It wasn't running well but this was quickly identified, being that the dump valve was missing. They don't like huge vaccum leaks. A friend of mine had a spare so that was quickly fitted. The problem of overheating in traffic (as mentioned in the ad) was an easy fix too. It's had mondeo fans fitted which get rid of the viscous fan, but they had been wired into the auxiliary fan swich which makes them only come on when the temp goes over 100! So this has been shorted out so they're always on. Not ideal as it will take the car longer to get to temp but it'll do for now. Another little issue I've found is the gearbox is slipping till it gets a bit of pressure, it looks like the problem is low fluid and although I have some, it's in a 5ltr container and I need to find a funnel, seeing as you refill through the dip stick tube! A good look underneath and there is possibly a little rust deep in the inner arch but it's difficult to tell, otherwise it's looking pretty solid. Yet another issue seems to be a powersteering fluid leak, it was raised as an advisory on the MOT and the pump was noisy till I topped it up. Hopefully the pump will be fine and I'll try some stop leak in it to start with. Other than a few niggles hear and there I'm really happy! It's had a couple of grand of engine work and a 600 quid vortex exhaust, not to mention some yellow stuff pads I spied behind the wheels. So what have I done first? The car was filthy so I dug out the machine polisher and went to town on it in the rain it's a bit hard to see my handiwork through the rain drops but if I've missed anything I should be able to get it with regular polish. More pics when the rain stops

I got well away with the polishing by hand, it's got the last few marks out and cleaned up the grill. I think I need to do the roof again though. I topped up the auto box too, I now have gears but either I'm getting false readings or it's coming back out fast so there's some cardboard under it to assess the problem. Last piccie for the day, looking so white all the details gone in the photo

Ive had a good day today, crossed a lot off the list. I've fitted my CD player that I originally got for my previous supra. White to match the car I had a go at making the car leak seeing as there was nothing on my cardboard. So I sat running it through the gears and turning the steering from lock to lock. But nothing.... However.... Where the frick is my transmission cooler? That could explain the lack of fluid, well at least it's not leaking. I can get another cooler. I couldn't fit the exhaust today as I couldn't get any rubbers, they should be here tuesday though. The steering column shroud is back on and I've tidied up the short to make sure the fans stay on, and finished the last of the polishing seeing as the rain interrupted me the other day. Oh and I fitted the nose cone badge too. I checked all the levels/tyre pressures and went for a little cheeky test drive too it pulls well through the gears with no funny noises. Very happy

I've just been kindly reminded that those are engine oil lines not transmission oil lines. The trans cooler is usually built into the rad, as the rad is not standard that is missing too... Hmm maybe I'll not bother. That rad is so huge the engine is running a bit cool anyway. As for the transmission, it can't be that big a deal or everyone who fitted an aftermarket rad would have had issues!

We may or may not have forgotten about the open sunroof and windows on the BMW last night... It tipped it down all night... We tried to dry it this morning to go to work in but it was hopeless. So we got the supra out instead Yes it has only a downpipe on but it's no louder than some of the stuff we have driven before with full exhausts on, and the interior was dry!
So, shakedown run! aaaand the gearbox is FUBAR. It held gears while it was all cold but it's slipping again and on rechecking the fluid level, it's still full. I think we can probably borrow the ramp at Phil's (my OH) work so that should make the job of changing it easier.
The heater control panel is on it's way out, it'll only blow hot if you push against the slider. But apart from that it's working well. Still happy! I'm in two minds about emailing the seller as he didn't bother to mention that the gearbox slipped, it's not exactly subtle! But it was cheap at £570

Could the trans fluid getting hotter than spec cause the slipping? I seem to remember these having multiple rads but not been under one since '86. Coolant, Air Con, trans fluid and engine oil. Always thought the trans was separate and the engine oil was integral in the coolant rad. That way they used the same coolant rad for auto and manual and just added the trans fluid rad to the slush boxes.

It should go through the coolant rad then through another seperate cooler. I have the cooler but it's not going through the rad anymore. I think the damage is already done though The cooler I'm missing is definitely engine oil. I don't know how sensitive the box is likely to be about not having the second cooling stop in the rad. Here is a diagram of fluids and coolers on the MK3;

Been sniffing around old forum posts on other forums and found a 'manual' for the 7M-GT and 7M-GTE engined MK3's. LINK Don't know if this will be loads of help or no help at all but posted anyway. I see what you mean by the flow in the diagram you posted, very odd having two coolers. What a result for £570, thats in the 'donor car' range for a kit car build not a road going 'sports coupe' . So jealous I've started trawling....

Thanks but I've already done an auto to manual conversion and a manual to auto conversion on a Supra and it all ended badly on the latter, so I'm already put off the idea! Get trawling, with enough patience there are bargains to be had. Oh, and there's a replacement gearbox for it in the boot of the BMW. Mwahahahaha it shall be driveable soon!

My auto Legnum was slipping badly last summer, I did a full flush and fluid replacement and it was fine. The fluid should be a nice bright red, not a horrible dark brown like mine was!
