Classic - Would be any car that is considered to hold a particular place in peoples hearts of an era gone by, or a significant car of a particular brand - i.e. VW Golf Mk1, Mk1 Mini, Beetle, Air cooled 911, BMW 2002 (had to get that in somewhere !), etc, or something the TAX man says you can have free tax on !!!
Retro - Is a car that can belong to the above, but would also, largely be considered 'cool' to MOST of us. I would usually reserve my description of 'retro' to cooler cars of the 70's & 80's. Mainly because that is before I was driving, but before the cars had gained classic status in that era. People younger than me, may consider cool cars from the 90's to be retro. I would just consider them to be 'old' cars.
A very subjective subject. If your insurance company is happy to give you 'classic' insurance, just take it.

I like how this goes round and round in circles. Its easy to say that for the purpose of this forum its x+y=z, but as nofd said, depending on your age, or what age of car you are interested in, your view is going to be different. If a new car is released next week with retro influences in its design is it retro? Might it even be a classic if its the first ever production car to run on air? you could read so much into the meanings of the words that they end up being almost worthless.

If you're selling "Its a classic mate". If you're buying it's "Nah pal, that's not old enough to be a classic, thats only retro that is". Simple really.

Slow day at work today, so how about this as a definition? When your car is worth more than it's original price, it's a classic. And if your car is worth more than a second hand version of the model that replaced it, it's retro. Example, A Sierra Cosworth is a classic because they fetch more (good ones!) than when they were in the dealers showroom, a Sierra 1.6L is retro, because a usable Mondeo can be brought for less money. Hi, That's a fair point but the value or price doesn't tell the whole story. Cars go through a banger stage before they become a classic. During the banger stage if it goes wrong and costs more than twopence to fix it would get bridged in a heartbeat. When it's a classic and it goes wrong it's the case of how or what can we do to fix this. Colin Absolutely right, in my time I've broken an A Frame MK1 Lotus Cortina and a twin plug Alfa Giulia GT, just old unfixable cars, now a very nice pension pot! I thought my definition worked because it relies on people voting with their pockets, cars stop being bangers when people start spending money on them, either to buy or keep working, And I know this question has been rehashed many times, but like a top ten list down the pub, it's kinda fun.. Now that's subject for a thread, the all time top ten classics....(runs and hides)!

a car from the 50s/60s/70s there classics to me, all metal, brilliant interior and styling and chrome bumpers, " retro " so to speak is what i'd consider the " modern classics " so cars from the 80s & 90s, to old to be considered modern but to young to be considered classic - just my 2 pence

edit - i also think a car that evokes certain emotions like nostalgia etc can make a car a classic, as it's like a memory, i'm one of them few people whom believe cars have souls...

Duck tape!
If your car or others like it can be seen with duck tape covering a sharp bit (I'm thinking like a W124 Merc or my Sierra atm)on the body work, it is well and truly in our circle!
Also agree with Bazzateer.

A generational thing methinks.

It's a pointless discussion, but still fun. More pictures of great cars will keep Hotwire and VIP quiet!
