Is Body Solder (or lead body filler) dead ?
Especially given all the recent "Lead" rulings in the EU of late.
as a skill used in the custom scene for many years, I havnt seen a car with it done for at least 10 years.

Hotrodders still like it but there aren't many people about who can do it.

At one point I was really keen to learn how to do this and I read quite a bit about it but then I thought at the end of the day its not that far removed from using bodge/filler/wag etc. Thats just my opinion and I respect people who do it, but for the time it takes I could have welded a piece in, skimmed it with filler, lashed some paint on and gone down the pub.

I do it. I don't get to do it often for customers but my owns cars usually get it. Definatel;y prefer over plastic anyday and wish I could do it more but plastic has come along way now and alot of the past troubles have been fixed and its very cheap sdo there just really isn't much competition. Phoenixc, I actually find lead wiping/filling alot quicker then using plastic in most cases. Once you get a bit of a knack and get the techniques right you will know what I mean. Its something I wanted to learn like you and now I am glad I did.

I used to use it when I did car restoration for a living we would seal all the welds with it and use it to get a general body contour but the finall finish would still be (an albeit thin) coating of plastic filler, its a good skill to have and Its very satifying when done right.

The only real advantage physically with lead IMO is that plastic cracks when dried if touchs/pushed etc. Lead doesn't, it will bend with the metal. But also as I said its also quicker to use then plastic when you are good at it.
Thats about it and its has a few disadantages, but I like traditional techniques and hot rodding. Plus some customers ask for it so they get it.
