Lol it was a good decade ago now, when Halfords had knowledgeable staff before they started cutting salaries and losing a generation of knowledge. He did let me drive his Cavalier mk2 Sri saloon (black one not a red one!) once and it felt so fast compared to my 1.1 fiesta lol. Doubt he drives anything as crazy these days, wife and kids last I saw him. That said those days were very different, Fast Car was based down the road and used the car park for photo shoots, mini meets and the staff were regularly in.

scariest, rev2 MR2 turbo. quickest, R33 skyline modded to 450bhp
although i've been driving mk2 astra gte 16v's for the last 15 years, according to all the people on the internets who have test driven them from their keyboard and monitor, i shouldve been killed to death backwards into a ravine by now

Scary due to my inability to drive properly at the time and I guess fairly nippy for what it was but my Cinquecento Sporting when I was 18 was absolutely hilarious. I used to drive everywhere with my foot to the floor, barely gripping around corners and not a clue what I was doing. I was lucky the car died before I did.

Back in the early 2000's Was a passenger in the Volks-Speed G60 20v Supercharged caddy during early shakedown tests, remember seeing it hit the speedo limit needle at 120 in 3rd and suddenly remembering it had stock brakes on chopped springs. edit:just found this ad from 2012 www.volkszone.com/VZi/showthread.php?t=756785To drive around the same time, a sierra XR4i 4x4 from the auctions for 150 with knackered suspension, wanted to kill you at every opportunity but sounded fabulous... Recently. Jag XK8's are cheap when the come through the auctions these days. A lot of bang for your buck, but avoid wet roads and sudden clunky auto gear changes...

Once upon a time in the early 1990's a mate of mine rescued an old K reg mini that had been parked around the corner for ages, and had started getting 'wallet emptying dandruff' around the tyres and the wipers no longer had a visible track. We picked 'BAP' up (reg BAP...K) and after 50 quid parted we towed it back home for inspection. We thought the engine mounts were knackered as the sump was really low to the ground, but thought otherwise when we noticed part of the bulkhead had been cut out and extended, along with the area behind the speedo for the carbs.
The amount of pure back/green? smoke that poured out once we got it started was jaw dropping, and the noise was like a mini, but gruffer and deeper. Got some brakes (drums all round) and did a bit of*cough* welding (involving plenty of filler and sprigs of welding wire to stick in it)and it sailed through the MOT. Drove pretty conservatively until we discovered a small piece of finely honed metal preventing the accelerator from opening 60% of the extra space. Not the same car anymore. It was like being able to fast forward a video of normal everyday driving. Roundabouts were minor bumps in the road - We almost felt like we had to talk on helium or speed up sentences as it was crazy fast. Ticked over like 5 wooden ladles in a washing machine and sounded like it was moaning 'DDDDDIIIIIEEEEEE' when you switched it off. Went past a senator on the M40 and it felt like we were standing still and everything else was flying past us - like one of those Tomytronic driving games.
Turned out it had a modified 1750 Maxi lump in it with some kind of jaguar carb on it. It had such an innocent cute face, but with a somewhat blank stare due to chrome erosion in the headlights. Simply a dog to drive and gears were like trying to grab the last bits of heinz spaghetti with a really blunt fork.
Don't remember much else about it apart from nowadays it feels like a series of slightly concerning bad dreams - It really wasn't a car you looked forward to driving, more of an endurance test.
I genuinely let out a dry chugnut once in that thing. Looking back on it. Trousers acted like a rubbish chute thankfully otherwise I would of never lived that one down .....
